Improvement of essential hypertension and diabetic nephropathy
This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Also, as part of hypertension treatment, it helps prevent and manage the progression of kidney disease in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is used for blood pressure control and maintaining kidney health.
For adults with essential hypertension, administer 150 mg of Irbesartan orally once daily, and if the effect is insufficient, it can be increased to 300 mg. For adults with kidney disease and hypertension who have type 2 diabetes, it is recommended to start with 150 mg orally once daily and increase up to 300 mg for maintenance. In elderly patients (aged 75 and over) and patients on dialysis, an initial dose of 75 mg should be considered.
This medication can cause serious harm, particularly to the fetus and newborn, during pregnancy; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. This medication should not be used by women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or patients with severe liver disease or allergies to this drug or its components. Particularly, patients with a history of angioedema, certain hereditary metabolic disorders, diabetic nephropathy patients, and those taking ACE inhibitors should avoid administration. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, liver disease, and heart disease should use this medication cautiously, as there is a risk of blood pressure dropping too low, requiring attention. Rarely, serious adverse reactions such as angioedema, hyperkalemia, renal failure, liver function impairment, hypoglycemia, or rhabdomyolysis may occur, so consult a doctor immediately if unusual symptoms develop. While taking this medication, regular checks of blood pressure, kidney function, and blood potassium levels are essential. Patients with poor kidney or heart function should be particularly cautious. Interactions may occur when combined with other antihypertensives, diuretics, potassium-sparing agents, lithium, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), so always consult healthcare providers. Use during pregnancy is prohibited, and if breastfeeding, either the administration should be avoided, or nursing should be discontinued as this medication can pass into breast milk. Safety in children has not been established, so it is best not to use it in pediatric patients. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, tachycardia, and bradycardia may occur; immediate medical attention should be sought if symptoms develop. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children, and it is safest to keep it in its original container.
