Treatment of hypertension and myocardial ischemia (such as stable angina)
This medication is used to control hypertension and prevent and treat myocardial ischemia caused by stable angina due to fixed obstruction of the coronary arteries and variant angina due to coronary artery spasm.
Adults: Administer amlodipine 5 mg orally once daily. If symptoms do not improve within 2 ∼ 4 weeks, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 10 mg per day according to the patient's response. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to symptoms.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, those allergic to this drug or similar ingredients, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and women who are breastfeeding should avoid taking this medication. Additionally, patients with severely impaired cardiac function, those in a state of cardiac shock, patients with serious problems with cardiac valves, patients with unstable angina, those within one month after myocardial infarction, and patients with severe hepatic dysfunction or hypotension should not use this medication. Patients with severely impaired kidney function, elderly individuals, patients with acute heart failure, patients with very high blood pressure, patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction, those with limited left ventricular function, patients with low cardiac reserve, and patients with diabetes should use this medication with extra caution. This medication is generally well-tolerated, but during use, side effects such as flushing, warmth, fatigue, swelling, palpitations, dizziness, headache, nausea, drowsiness, and ankle edema may occur. Additionally, rare side effects may include dry mouth, increased sweating, hypotension, fainting, neurological symptoms, gastrointestinal issues, skin rashes, abnormal liver function, and allergic reactions; if any abnormal symptoms appear, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Abruptly discontinuing this medication can worsen symptoms, so it should not be stopped arbitrarily without a doctor’s direction, and if dosage reduction is needed, it should be done gradually. Taking the medication with sufficient water is recommended, and since low blood pressure can cause dizziness or fatigue, caution is necessary when driving or operating dangerous machinery. This medication may interact with other blood pressure medicines or various drugs, so if other medications are being taken, it is essential to inform healthcare professionals. In particular, taking it with grapefruit juice may excessively enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect, so it is advisable to avoid this combination. Safety has not been established for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and if necessary, consultation with healthcare professionals should be conducted before making a decision. The safety and efficacy for pediatric patients have not been adequately confirmed, so it is preferable not to use this medication in children. Elderly patients may have slower drug metabolism, so starting with a lower dose and monitoring their condition closely is recommended. In the case of overdose, severe hypotension, headache, and cardiac abnormalities may occur, thus immediate medical attention should be sought.
