Efficacy & effects

Improvement effect on type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)

  • Abnormal blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with meal and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered as monotherapy, and if there is no improvement in blood sugar levels with other oral hypoglycemic agents, it can be used in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. In addition to medication, patients with type 2 diabetes require nutritional counseling and, if necessary, weight loss and regular exercise. These lifestyle improvements are critical not only for initial treatment but also for maintaining drug efficacy. Therefore, this medication is used to effectively enhance the patient's blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and works to improve insulin resistance. When taking this medication, care must be taken with cardiac function. This medication should be avoided in patients with congestive heart failure, as it may worsen the condition. After starting treatment, the physician should closely monitor for signs of heart failure, such as weight gain, shortness of breath, and swelling. This medication should not be used in patients with a history of heart failure, active bladder cancer, or severe liver or kidney dysfunction. Additionally, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should exercise caution when taking this medication and should use appropriate contraception. This medication may cause fluid retention and edema, so it should be used cautiously in patients with edema, and consultation with a physician should occur if edema worsens. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when used in combination with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents such as sulfonylureas, so blood sugar levels and symptoms of hypoglycemia should be closely monitored during combination therapy. Regular liver function tests should be conducted in patients with liver function abnormalities, and any symptoms suggestive of liver damage should be reported to healthcare providers immediately. Long-term use of this medication may increase the risk of weight gain and fractures, making it crucial to periodically assess weight and bone health status. If gross hematuria or urinary dysfunction occurs during use, there is a possibility of bladder cancer, so the doctor should be informed immediately. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children or individuals under 18 years of age have not been established. This medication can interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers of any other medications being taken. In case of overdose, specific symptoms may not be present, but appropriate treatment should be pursued according to the symptoms.
