Efficacy & effects

Auxiliary effects for ophthalmic surgeries (cataract, corneal transplant, glaucoma)

View approved original text

This medication is used as an auxiliary in various ophthalmic surgeries including cataract lens implantation, corneal transplant, and glaucoma surgery. It helps with the recovery of the surgical site, aids in the prevention of complications, and enhances surgical effectiveness. Therefore, it is a very useful adjunct for patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery.

How it is given

Adult administration

In cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation, gradually inject the required amount into the anterior chamber of the eye through a needle or cannula before or after lens removal. Administer prior to both intracapsular and extracapsular cataract surgeries to optimize corneal endothelial protective effects. In corneal transplantation, fill the anterior chamber with this medication until the corneal surface and the graft are aligned, then place the donor graft and suture. In glaucoma filtration surgery, this medication is injected through corneal puncture to supplement and maintain anterior chamber volume.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to any of the components or to protein-based drugs. Eye-related side effects may include increased intraocular pressure, and rarely, inflammatory reactions, corneal edema, corneal opacity, hemorrhage, iris abnormalities, mydriasis, lens opacification, pain, itching, and decreased vision may occur. Additionally, there is a rare risk of clouding on the surface of the intraocular lens. Due to the presence of phosphate in this medication, there have been rare reports of corneal calcification in patients with severe corneal damage. Careful monitoring of intraocular pressure should be conducted immediately after surgery, and appropriate treatment should be undertaken if pressure increases. If possible, it is advisable to remove this medication postoperatively through irrigation or suction. Before performing ultrasonic emulsification surgery, irrigation should be done to create a space filled with irrigation solution between the lens and this medication. Surgical instruments should not be cleaned with solutions containing quaternary ammonium compounds such as benzalkonium chloride. This medication should not be used in conjunction with the enzyme hyaluronidase. This product is for ophthalmic use only and must not be injected intravascularly. Before use, the refrigerated medication should be allowed to reach room temperature for about 30 minutes. Caution is needed as mixing with substances like benzalkonium chloride or chlorhexidine may cause precipitation. Once opened, the medication should only be used once, and any remaining product should be discarded with the container. When mixing this medication with air, care should be taken to avoid air entering beneath the iris. During injection, it should be done slowly and carefully, and excessive amounts should not be injected into the anterior chamber. Over-injection may lead to increased intraocular pressure post-surgery. It should be stored out of reach of children and kept sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
