Emergency contraception effect

View approved original text

This medication is an emergency contraceptive that should be taken immediately within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure to prevent unintended pregnancy. Quick usage is essential, and it is primarily used as an alternative to regular contraceptive methods in emergency situations. This method can expect to provide safe and effective contraceptive results.

How to take

Adult dose

Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg should be taken orally once. The sooner you take it after intercourse, the higher the effectiveness. It should be taken as soon as possible (recommended within 12 hours), and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected intercourse. If you vomit within 3 hours of taking it, take another 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrel immediately.

Precautions

This medication is used as an emergency contraceptive and should not replace regular contraceptive methods. Even though it is an emergency contraceptive, it cannot perfectly prevent all pregnancies. Therefore, if your period is more than 5 days late or you experience abnormal bleeding, you must confirm whether you are pregnant. Women who are allergic to this medication, pregnant or possibly pregnant, patients with severe liver disease, or those with specific hereditary lactose intolerance disorders should not use it. Patients at risk of ectopic pregnancy or those with digestive disorders, heart, or kidney diseases should use this medication cautiously. Side effects such as dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, uterine pain, breast tenderness, menstrual delay or bleeding, and fatigue may occur, most of which will resolve within 48 hours. Skin allergic reactions may occur after taking the medication, and there may be a risk of thrombosis, so caution is needed. If you take this medication more than once in a menstrual cycle or if the timing of intercourse is uncertain, its effectiveness may decrease. After taking it, you should use non-hormonal contraceptive methods such as condoms until your next period begins. If it has been 72 hours after intercourse, this medication will not be effective and should not be taken; engaging in intercourse again after taking it may result in the possibility of pregnancy. Your period may appear around 3 days earlier or later than expected after taking the medication, and if there is abnormal bleeding or no period for more than 5 days, you should have a pregnancy test. Women at risk of thrombosis should be cautious when taking this medication, and it does not have effects in preventing sexually transmitted infections. Consult your doctor before starting regular contraceptive methods after taking this medication, as repeated use may elevate hormone levels and potentially harm your health. If there is an increase in weight or body mass index, the effectiveness of this medication may decrease, so it is important to take it as soon as possible. Taking it with drugs that induce liver enzymes may reduce its effectiveness, so such combinations should be avoided. If you have taken such medications in the last four weeks, consider using non-hormonal contraceptive methods. This medication should not be used during pregnancy, and if you are breastfeeding, it is recommended to refrain from nursing for at least 8 hours after taking it. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as nausea or bleeding may appear, but no severe side effects have been reported, and treatment should be provided according to the symptoms. This medication should be stored away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children, as transferring it to another container may compromise its quality.
