Efficacy & effects

Emergency contraception effect

View approved original text

Emergency contraceptive pills are used to prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. The sooner this medication is taken, the more effective it is. It is a very useful option to prevent unwanted pregnancy. However, it is not recommended to use this as a regular contraceptive method, and it is advisable to consult a professional if needed. Emergency contraceptives play an important role in reducing the likelihood of pregnancy in unexpected situations, so they should be used actively.

How to take

Adult dose

Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg is taken orally once. The sooner it is taken post-intercourse, the higher the efficacy. The medication should be taken as soon as possible (within 12 hours recommended) after unprotected intercourse, but no later than 72 hours (3 days) afterwards. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking it, another 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrel should be taken immediately.

Precautions

This medication should only be used for temporary purposes as an emergency contraceptive and should not replace regular contraceptive methods. Pregnancy cannot be completely prevented in all cases by using this medication, so if the expected menstrual period is delayed by more than 5 days or if abnormal bleeding occurs, it is essential to confirm the possibility of pregnancy. This medication must not be used by individuals who are allergic to it or its ingredients, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, and patients with severe liver disease. Individuals at risk for ectopic pregnancy or those with severe gastrointestinal diseases like Crohn's disease, as well as those with a history of heart or kidney disease, should use this medication with caution. Side effects such as dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, breast tenderness, menstrual delay or bleeding, and fatigue may occur but generally resolve within 48 hours. This medication should only be used once within a single menstrual cycle, and if there is uncertainty regarding the timing of intercourse, full effectiveness may be difficult to achieve. Condoms or other non-hormonal contraceptive methods should be used until the next menstrual period begins, even after taking this medication. This medication becomes ineffective after 72 hours following intercourse, so it should not be used after that time. This medication does not prevent sexually transmitted infections, so separate measures are needed for STI prevention. There is a risk of thrombosis; therefore, women with a history of thrombosis or a family history of it should exercise particular caution. This medication may interact with drugs metabolized in the liver, and its effectiveness may be reduced when used in conjunction with certain anticonvulsants or antibiotics; therefore, concomitant use should be avoided. This medication should not be used during pregnancy and is advised to refrain from breastfeeding for at least 8 hours after taking this medication if nursing. If an overdose occurs, symptoms such as nausea or bleeding may arise, but there is no specific antidote, and treatment should depend on the symptoms. It is important to store this medication out of reach of children and to keep it in its original packaging away from direct sunlight.
