Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in exogenous obesity
This medication is used when appropriate weight loss methods such as dietary therapy and exercise do not adequately respond. It is particularly used as an adjunctive treatment for patients with exogenous obesity who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or higher, or those with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or higher, along with exercise, behavior modification, and calorie restriction for a short period of time. It is important to use this medication alone and not in combination with other appetite suppressants. BMI is calculated by dividing weight (kg) by the square of height (m), and a proper diagnosis and treatment plan are established based on the patient's weight and height using a BMI chart. This medication is used to assist obese patients who have difficulty controlling their weight in losing weight.
Adults: Administer phentermine hydrochloride 37.5 mg orally once daily before breakfast or 1 ~ 2 hours after breakfast. Use the minimum effective dose, adjusting the dose individually to achieve an adequate response. A dose of 18.75 mg once daily may be appropriate for some patients, and in some cases it may be preferable to take 18.75 mg twice daily. Avoid taking this medicine late at night because it may cause insomnia. This medicine should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce inappropriate use and risks associated with this medicine, treatment may continue if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants. It should only be used alone and for a short duration. Co-administration with other weight loss medications is not recommended due to uncertain safety and efficacy. While using this medication, attention should be paid to symptoms associated with primary pulmonary hypertension. If difficulty in breathing, chest pain, fainting, or leg swelling occurs, it is important to inform a doctor immediately, and treatment should be discontinued if such symptoms occur. Long-term use or exceeding the recommended dose may increase the risk of valvular heart disease, so caution is needed. Patients with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, mental instability, or a history of substance abuse should not take this medication. Additionally, it is not to be administered to children under the age of 16 or to women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Diabetic patients should be aware that insulin dosage adjustments may be necessary when taking this medication. It is also advisable to avoid using this medication if other appetite suppressants have been used in the past year. This medication can affect the central nervous system, leading to side effects such as anxiety, insomnia, headache, and dizziness, and in rare cases, mental disorders may occur. Caution is required when engaging in potentially dangerous activities such as driving or operating machinery. In case of overdose, serious symptoms such as anxiety, coma, seizures, abnormal blood pressure, and vomiting may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment. Combining this medication with alcohol may increase the risk of side effects, so it is recommended to avoid this combination. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should only take this medication under the guidance of a physician, considering its effects on the fetus and infant. This medication should be stored in a place inaccessible to children, as there is a risk of abuse potential leading to dependence.
