This medication is used for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern hair loss, in adult men. Primarily, this drug helps to slow the progression of hair loss and promotes hair growth, thereby improving symptoms of hair loss. With consistent use, effects may be expected where hair in the balding areas gradually becomes thicker and healthier. It also contributes to reducing psychological burdens caused by hair loss and improving quality of life. It is actively used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss.

How to take

Adult dose

Typically, finasteride is administered orally at a dose of 1 mg once a day, and can be taken regardless of food. Generally, treatment effects are seen after at least 3 months of use, and continuous administration is recommended to maintain therapeutic effects. Treatment duration and efficacy should be continuously evaluated. If discontinued, therapeutic effects will diminish within 12 months.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in children or women. In particular, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle broken pieces of this medication. This medication may affect mental health, potentially causing mood changes such as depression or suicidal thoughts, so these symptoms should be reported to a healthcare professional immediately. Administration of this drug to pregnant women poses a risk of abnormal development of external genitalia in male fetuses and should absolutely be avoided. Patients with liver function issues should use this medication with greater caution. This drug may cause sexual side effects such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders, and most of these symptoms recover upon discontinuation of the drug. Other reported side effects include breast tenderness or enlargement, allergic reactions, muscle pain, anxiety, dizziness, headache, and palpitations. If any changes such as lumps or tenderness in the breast or nipple discharge occur while taking this medication, you should notify your doctor immediately. The level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) may decrease, so caution is needed in interpreting test results. While significant drug interactions have not been reported with this medication, it is advised to consult healthcare professionals when using it in conjunction with other medications. There is no specific treatment for overdose, and it should be kept out of the reach of children. There is no need for special dose adjustments in elderly patients, but effectiveness in the elderly has not been sufficiently established.
