The maximum daily dose is 75 mg, and the last dose should be taken no later than 4 hours before bedtime. To minimize the potential for abuse, prescribe or dispense the lowest possible dose during the initial period (within 2 weeks), and adjust the dose individually to obtain an appropriate response. This medicine should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of inappropriate use, treatment with this medicine may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (a weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or when both the physician and patient consider the weight loss satisfactory).

View approved original text

This medication is used as a short-term adjunct in patients with obesity and a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or in patients with a BMI of 27 or higher with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia, who do not respond to appropriate dietary therapy and exercise. It may assist in weight loss therapy based on calorie restriction, and should be used alone without other appetite suppressants for safety. For those outside the normal weight range, a BMI calculation may help with weight management. This medication helps to improve health status through effective weight loss.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults: Administer 25 mg of diethylpropion hydrochloride orally 3 times daily, 1 hour before meals.

Precautions

This medication should not be used with other appetite suppressants and should only be used alone for a short period. The weight loss effect is limited, so it should be used with caution and use should be discontinued if no effect is seen without increasing the dosage. Prolonged use can lead to drug abuse and dependence, which is strictly prohibited. If mental dependence develops, the medication should be discontinued gradually, as sudden cessation can result in severe fatigue and depression. If symptoms such as angina, syncope, limb edema, or exercise-induced dyspnea occur, use should be discontinued immediately and pulmonary hypertension should be checked. This medication may increase the risk of pulmonary hypertension and valvular heart disease, so heart examinations should be conducted. It should not be used in patients with specific diseases or conditions, such as hypertension, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, psychiatric disorders, or a history of substance abuse. Patients with cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or diabetes require regular monitoring and caution during administration. This medication affects the central nervous system, so care should be taken during machine operation or driving. There may be interactions with other medications, so it is essential to inform the doctor of any concurrent medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid using this medication unless necessary and should consult with a doctor. It is not safe for children under 16 years of age or elderly patients with diminished renal function.
