Improvement of atherosclerotic symptoms such as ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction and reduction of risk for stroke and thromboembolism.
This medication is primarily used to improve various symptoms related to vascular health. It helps improve atherosclerotic symptoms in patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and peripheral arterial disease. It is also used to reduce cardiovascular complications after drug therapy, coronary intervention, or coronary artery bypass grafting in patients with acute coronary syndrome. It is effective in lowering the risk of stroke and thromboembolism in patients with atrial fibrillation who have vascular risk factors and face challenges with vitamin K antagonism. Overall, this drug is used to improve symptoms of vascular-related diseases and reduce risks.
For patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease, take 75 mg orally once daily. For patients with acute coronary syndrome, begin with a loading dose of 300 mg orally once daily on the day of treatment initiation, followed by a maintenance dose of 75 mg orally once daily. During this time, aspirin 75-325 mg should also be taken orally once daily. For patients with atrial fibrillation, take 75 mg orally once daily.
This medication helps prevent platelets in the blood from clumping together, thereby facilitating blood flow. Caution is needed as this medication may be less effective in individuals genetically predisposed to diminished function of certain enzymes (CYP2C19) in the liver, which could lead to increased cardiovascular issues after a heart attack. It is not recommended to use this medication in conjunction with drugs that activate liver enzymes, as it could raise the drug's concentration and increase bleeding risks. Patients with allergies to this drug or its components, active bleeding, severe liver damage, nursing women, and those with lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients at high risk of bleeding or with coagulation issues should use this medication with caution, particularly, they should discuss with their physician about adjusting the drug regimen before any surgery. While taking this medication, bleeding may take longer to stop; symptoms or signs of bleeding should be reported to a physician immediately. Since this medication can cause changes in platelet counts in blood tests, it is important to monitor conditions through blood tests during treatment. Concomitant use with other drugs that raise bleeding risk or affect blood coagulation can further elevate bleeding risk. Consultation with a physician or pharmacist is mandatory. During pregnancy, the risk to the fetus is minimal; however, there is a risk of bleeding during childbirth, so it is advisable to stop using this medication 5-7 days before the expected delivery date. For those who are nursing, the decision to take this medication should be made after consulting with a physician. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children are not yet established, hence it should be used cautiously in young patients. Elderly patients may have a higher bleeding risk due to decreased physical function, necessitating dosage adjustments and close monitoring. Overdosing on this medication may increase bleeding significantly, and as there is no specific antidote, platelet transfusions might be necessary to halt bleeding. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container can compromise quality.
