Treatment of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control, overweight)

  • Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication helps control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes who cannot sufficiently manage their blood sugar with diet and exercise alone, particularly in those who are overweight. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin, allowing for flexible treatment options. This helps effectively manage blood sugar levels and contributes to the prevention of diabetes-related complications.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer one Metformin hydrochloride sustained-release tablet of 500mg daily with the evening meal. Measure blood sugar levels after one week to adjust the dosage. When increasing the dosage, it should be increased by 500mg each week, and can be administered up to a maximum of 2000mg daily with the evening meal. If blood sugar control is not achieved even at a maximum dose of 2000mg daily, consider administering 1000mg twice daily, with both doses taken with meals.

Precautions

This medication can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, so one should be well aware of this symptom. Lactic acidosis is a condition where lactic acid accumulates excessively in the body, which can be life-threatening if not treated quickly. Additionally, when this medication is used in combination with other diabetes medications, there may be a risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, dehydration, acute conditions such as severe infections, or heart failure should not use this medication because renal function plays a crucial role in the drug's excretion, and decreased function increases the risk of side effects due to drug accumulation in the body. Patients who are scheduled to undergo tests with iodine contrast agents should temporarily suspend taking this medication before and after the test and only resume after confirming normal renal function. Patients with allergies to any ingredients of this medication, type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe infections, or liver dysfunction should also avoid using this medication. While using this medication, caution is needed due to the increased risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia with irregular meals, excessive exercise, or taking interacting medications. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, vitamin B12 deficiency, altered taste, etc., with gastrointestinal symptoms commonly occurring initially but improving over time. Regular checks of renal function as well as blood sugar and vitamin B12 levels are necessary to ensure there are no abnormalities, and any concerning symptoms should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately. During pregnancy, careful consideration is necessary due to the potential impact on the fetus, and during breastfeeding, as this medication is excreted in breast milk, careful decisions should be made about breastfeeding and whether to interrupt treatment. Elderly patients are more likely to have decreased renal function, so dosage adjustment and regular monitoring of renal function should be conducted. In the case of overdose, blood dialysis can be used to remove the drug, so care should be taken not to exceed the prescribed dosage. This medication may interact with other drugs, so if you are taking any other medications, you must inform your healthcare provider, especially when using drugs that can affect blood sugar control.
