This medication is used for managing hypertension. Additionally, it is effective in treating kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes who have hypertension. Therefore, it helps prevent associated renal complications as well as hypertension.

How to take

Adult dose

It is recommended to take this medication at the same time every day, regardless of meals. 1. Hypertension The recommended starting and maintenance dose is 50 mg orally once daily of losartan potassium. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, the same dose can be split and taken twice daily, or increased up to 100 mg once daily as needed. 2. Kidney disease in patients with hypertension having type 2 diabetes Usually, 50 mg once daily of this medication is recommended.

Precautions

This medication should not be taken by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, especially during the second and third trimesters, as it can cause serious harm to the fetus. Patients with severely impaired liver function, a history of angioedema, or certain genetic disorders should not take this medication. Particular caution is required when used by elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function, or hyperkalemia; regular monitoring of blood pressure and blood tests is necessary. During treatment, dizziness or symptoms of hypotension may occur, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Taking this medication together with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements may lead to dangerously high potassium levels; do not take any potassium-containing medication or supplements without consulting a doctor. Occasionally, side effects such as angioedema, allergic reactions, liver function abnormalities, muscle pain, and dry cough may occur, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported to medical personnel immediately. This medication may affect kidney function, so patients with kidney disease or heart failure require dose adjustments and monitoring under a doctor’s supervision. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels is needed during treatment to check for abnormalities. Overdose may lead to symptoms such as hypotension and bradycardia, so it's essential to strictly adhere to the prescribed dosage, and if side effects occur, immediate medical attention is required. It is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medication, and when using other medications, consult your doctor regarding potential interactions.
