Symptom relief and anti-inflammatory effects for endocrine (adrenal cortical insufficiency, etc.), rheumatic (arthritis, etc.), and allergic (asthma, etc.) diseases
This medication is used for various conditions, including chronic and acute adrenal cortical insufficiency, and is effective for malignant exophthalmos caused by thyroid disease. It helps prevent worsening of chronic rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatic fever, which are rheumatic disorders. It is also used for autoimmune diseases such as lupus erythematosus, systemic vasculitis, polymyositis, and scleroderma, and is utilized in treating edematous diseases like nephrotic syndrome. In allergic diseases, it is used for bronchial asthma and drug allergies, and in severe infections, it is combined with chemotherapy. Additionally, it is widely applied in treating a variety of conditions including hematological disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, liver diseases, respiratory diseases, brain and neurological disorders, skin diseases, and ophthalmological and otolaryngological disorders. This drug is utilized broadly according to the patient's condition for treatment and symptom improvement of multiple diseases.
As hydrocortisone, 10-120 mg per day, divided into 1-4 doses orally. Adjust according to age and symptoms.
This drug should not be administered to certain patients. For example, it should not be given to patients who have allergies to this drug or its components, or those with infections or systemic fungal infections for which no effective antimicrobial agents are available, as this drug may exacerbate the infection. It should also not be used in patients with herpes simplex, shingles, or chickenpox, nor in patients with a genetic inability to break down lactose. This drug must be administered with caution to some patients. Those with tuberculous diseases or herpes keratitis may experience exacerbation of infection and should use this drug cautiously only when necessary. Patients with posterior subcapsular cataracts or hypertension should be careful as this drug may aggravate symptoms. Patients with electrolyte imbalances or thrombosis should be cautious as this drug may worsen their condition. Patients who have had surgery, those with peptic ulcers, mental illness, osteoporosis, glaucoma, or are experiencing acute myocardial infarction should also exercise special caution when using this drug. While taking this medication, various side effects including infections, endocrine issues, gastrointestinal abnormalities, mental and neurological symptoms, musculoskeletal disturbances, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, as well as problems related to eyes and skin may occur. Therefore, symptoms should be carefully monitored, and if any abnormal symptoms appear, the healthcare provider must be informed immediately. Long-term use of this drug may lead to adrenal suppression, and abrupt discontinuation can be dangerous; hence, the dosage should be gradually reduced. In stressful situations, the dosage may need to be temporarily increased. This drug can mask symptoms of infections or induce new infections, so special care should be taken to prevent and manage infections. Moreover, this drug may interact with other medications, requiring dosage adjustments or caution when taken with certain medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a physician before using this drug, as it may have effects on the fetus or newborn. In children, this drug should be administered cautiously at the minimum effective dose as it may affect growth, and the growth status should be monitored continuously. Elderly patients have a higher risk of side effects related to infections, diabetes, osteoporosis, hypertension, cataracts, and glaucoma, hence require careful observation and attention when using this drug.
