This medication is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men. Therefore, it is effective in maintaining bone health and preventing fractures.

How to take

Adult dose

As sodium alendronate, take 70 mg once a week in the morning at least 30 minutes before food, beverages, or other medications with a sufficient amount of water. This medication should be taken immediately upon waking in the morning and swallowed with a sufficient amount of water (170 to 230 mL). After taking it, do not lie down for at least 30 minutes and until the first food intake. If a dose is missed, take 70 mg the next morning.

Precautions

This medication can irritate the stomach and esophagus, so individuals with gastrointestinal conditions such as esophagitis or ulcers should be particularly cautious. Take this medication with a sufficient amount of water and avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking it to minimize esophageal irritation. If difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or heartburn occurs, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor. This medication is not to be administered to certain patients, such as those with esophageal stricture, severe renal impairment, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Additionally, it is advisable not to use it in cases of calcium deficiency or specific genetic conditions. While on this medication, it is important to maintain adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, and supplements should be taken if necessary. This medication may cause musculoskeletal pain or gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, nausea, indigestion, etc.), so if abnormal symptoms persist, consult with a doctor. Patients undergoing dental treatment should consult their doctor before and after treatment due to the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw. This medication may interact with other medications, so especially calcium supplements or antacids should be taken at least 30 minutes apart. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not take this medication, and it is also advisable to avoid it while breastfeeding. Safety for children and adolescents under 18 has not been established, so use should be avoided. Elderly patients can take this medication, but caution should be exercised considering sensitivity differences with age. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal irritation and hypocalcemia may occur, and immediate medical attention should be sought, avoiding induced vomiting. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and transferring it to other containers should be avoided.

Abdominal pain, nausea, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, acid reflux, esophageal ulcer, vomiting, dysphagia, abdominal bloating, gastritis, musculoskeletal (bone, muscle, or joint) pain, muscle cramps, headache, dizziness, taste disturbances, rash, itching, hair loss
