Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux, prevention of recurrence of reflux esophagitis, and prevention of NSAID-induced gastric and duodenal ulcers
This medication is used to treat mild gastroesophageal reflux disease and symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, and dysphagia associated with it. It is also effective for long-term maintenance therapy to prevent the recurrence of reflux esophagitis. Additionally, it helps to prevent gastric and duodenal ulcers in patients who need to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) continuously. This action improves the health of the stomach and esophagus.
1. Treatment of mild reflux esophageal disease and associated symptoms Administer pantoprazole 20 mg orally once daily before breakfast. Symptom relief generally occurs within 2 ∼ 4 weeks, and healing can usually be achieved with 4 weeks of treatment. If healing has not occurred, it may be achieved with an additional 4 weeks of treatment. 2. Long-term maintenance therapy to prevent recurrence of reflux esophagitis Administer pantoprazole 20 mg once daily before breakfast. If recurrence occurs, increase the dose to pantoprazole 40 mg daily, then reduce it again to 20 mg daily after healing. 3. Prevention of gastroduodenal ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in patients who require continuous treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs Administer pantoprazole 20mg once daily. No dose adjustment is necessary in elderly patients or patients with renal impairment. In patients with severe hepatic impairment, do not exceed pantoprazole 20 mg once daily.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication, its ingredients, or benzimidazole derivatives may experience severe allergic reactions when using this medication. Additionally, patients taking specific antiviral drugs such as Atazanavir, Nelfinavir, or Rilpivirine should avoid using this medication together, as interactions may reduce its efficacy. It is safer not to use this medication in women during the first three months of pregnancy or those who may become pregnant, and in nursing mothers. Patients with genetic metabolic disorders such as lactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medication due to the lactose it contains. Various side effects may occur when taking this medication. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, constipation, abdominal bloating, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth are commonly reported. Systemic symptoms like fatigue, weakness, lethargy, edema, fever, and elevated body temperature may also occur. Serious liver damage, manifested as liver dysfunction, jaundice, or liver failure, has been reported. Allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock, urticaria, and angioedema may occur, necessitating immediate consultation with healthcare professionals if symptoms arise. Neurological and psychiatric symptoms like myalgia, arthralgia, headache, dizziness, visual disturbances, insomnia, depression, hallucinations, and confusion should also be noted. In severe cases, rhabdomyolysis, blood disorders, and severe skin diseases may develop. Long-term use of this medication necessitates regular monitoring. Particularly with usage exceeding one year, stomach acidity may decrease, hindering the absorption of vitamin B12, warranting caution. Elderly patients over 65 years or those with a history of gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, or gastrointestinal bleeding may have an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding with this medication and should use it with caution. Prolonged usage may also pose risks of hypomagnesemia, increased fracture risk, and the possibility of gastric polyps, hence the lowest effective dose and shortest duration of use are recommended. Dizziness or visual disturbances may occur while taking this medication, warranting caution when driving or operating machinery. There is potential for interactions with specific medications, so if other medications are being used, it is essential to inform the physician or pharmacist. Caution is especially needed when used with anticoagulants, antiviral drugs, and methotrexate. It is not safe for pregnant or nursing women to use this medication, and its experience in pediatric patients is limited, making it not recommended for children under 12 years of age. While no specific symptoms indicate an overdose, if symptoms appear, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is advised for appropriate treatment. This medication should be taken whole, without chewing or crushing, and should only be used for the minimum dose and appropriate duration as directed by a physician during long-term use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not transfer to other containers. Lastly, some tumor occurrences related to this medication have been reported in animal studies, necessitating caution with long-term use.
