This medication is used for the improvement of atherosclerotic symptoms caused by ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease. It also helps reduce the risk of death, myocardial infarction, and stroke due to cardiovascular complications after medical treatment or intervention in patients with acute coronary syndrome, especially those with unstable angina or non-ST elevation myocardial infarction. Additionally, in patients with atrial fibrillation who have vascular risk factors and are not suitable for vitamin K antagonists with low bleeding risk, it is effective in reducing the risks of stroke and thromboembolism. This medication is used to reduce various cardiovascular diseases and thromboembolic-related risks.

How to take

Adult dose

For patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease, administer 75 mg of clopidogrel once daily orally. For patients with acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina or non-ST elevation myocardial infarction), administer a loading dose of 300 mg orally once on the first day, followed by 75 mg once daily for maintenance. At this time, aspirin 75 - 325 mg should be administered once daily in conjunction with this medication.

Precautions

This medication prevents blood from clotting by inhibiting platelet aggregation. The effectiveness of this medication may be reduced in individuals with genetic variations leading to low function of a specific enzyme (CYP2C19); alternative treatments should be considered in such cases. Concomitant use with drugs that activate certain enzymes may increase medication concentrations and raise the risk of bleeding, hence should be avoided. Patients with a known allergy to this medication or those with bleeding, severely impaired liver function, nursing women, or individuals with certain genetic conditions should not take this medication. Patients at high risk of bleeding or those scheduled for surgery must exercise caution when taking this medication, and if bleeding symptoms occur, they should consult a physician immediately. The risk of bleeding may increase if taken with other medications that also increase bleeding risk. During treatment with this medication, bleeding may take longer to stop; notify healthcare professionals if bleeding is severe or prolonged. This medication can rarely cause thrombocytopenia or serious blood disorders; visit a hospital immediately if fever or signs of infection occur. Possible side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, dizziness, rash, etc., though these are usually mild. During pregnancy, the risk to the fetus is not significant; however, due to the potential for bleeding during delivery, discontinuation before childbirth is recommended. During breastfeeding, this medication may be excreted in breast milk, and it's advisable to discuss whether to continue or discontinue breastfeeding with a physician. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function may have a higher risk of bleeding and should use caution. Overdose may increase bleeding risk, and as there is no specific antidote, treatment such as platelet transfusion may be necessary in case of severe bleeding. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been established. During the course of this medication, inform your physician about the current use of this medication before starting new therapies or surgeries. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and care should be taken not to transfer it to other containers as this may affect its quality.
