Short-term weight loss adjunct therapy for obesity (including overweight with risk factors)
This medication is used for patients with initial obesity who do not respond to appropriate dietary and exercise regimens. Specifically, it is used as a short-term adjunct therapy for weight loss in cases where the body mass index (BMI) is 30 or more, or in cases where the BMI is above 27 with risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia. The drug should be taken alone without combining it with other appetite suppressants for effective treatment of exogenous obesity based on caloric restriction. Patients can set weight loss goals based on their BMI, and the medication assists in continuous weight management and health improvement. Therefore, it helps to reduce health risks associated with obesity and improve weight control.
Phendimetrazine Tartrate as a single dose of 35 mg should be administered orally 2 to 3 times a day, one hour before meals. The dosage should use the minimum effective dose but adjusted for individual patients to achieve appropriate responses. For some patients, a single dose of 17.5 mg once a day may be appropriate. The dosage should not exceed 70 mg per dose or three times a day. This medication is administered for a short term (within 4 weeks).
This medication should be used alone, as using it with other appetite suppressants can lead to serious heart problems. It should be used only for a short-term duration when treating exogenous obesity, and using it in combination with other weight loss medications may not be safe. Long-term usage can increase the risk of serious pulmonary disorders such as pulmonary arterial hypertension, so if symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, or fainting occur, discontinuation of the medication and immediate medical attention are necessary. There is also a risk related to heart valve diseases, so a cardiac examination should be conducted before using this medication, and individuals with cardiac murmurs or valve diseases should refrain from taking it. This medication should not be administered to those who are hypersensitive to sympathomimetics, individuals with cardiovascular diseases, patients with high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism patients, glaucoma patients, those who are mentally anxious or excited, individuals with a history of drug abuse, children under 16 years of age, and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Additionally, caution is advised when taken with other central nervous system stimulants or certain antidepressants, as this can lead to dangerously elevated blood pressure. Patients with mild hypertension, nursing women, and diabetic patients should be especially careful while using this medication, as diabetic patients may need insulin dosage adjustments. This medication may cause an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, as well as various side effects such as anxiety, dizziness, insomnia, headache, nausea, constipation, etc. If tolerance to the drug's effects develops, the dose should not be increased but rather the medication should be discontinued, and caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. In case of overdose, severe toxicity symptoms may appear, so the minimum effective dose should be prescribed, and a sudden discontinuation can lead to extreme fatigue and depression. Pregnant women should refrain from using it as it can be harmful to the fetus, and nursing women should also be cautious as it may be transmitted through breast milk. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established for children, so it should not be used in those under 16 years of age. Moreover, as this drug is classified as a controlled substance, there is a risk of abuse, and sudden cessation after prolonged high-dose use can lead to severe mental health issues and fatigue. When taking this drug, it is crucial to adhere to safe storage and proper usage guidelines.
