Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in exogenous obesity
This medication is used as a short-term adjunctive treatment to assist in weight loss for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or higher who do not respond to a proper diet and exercise regimen, or for patients with exogenous obesity and a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or higher with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. It should be used in conjunction with weight loss therapy based on exercise, behavior modification, and calorie restriction, and should not be used alone or in combination with other appetite suppressants. This treatment helps to effectively reduce weight and improve obesity-related health risks.
Adults: Administer 37.5 mg of phentermine hydrochloride orally once daily before breakfast or 1 to 2 hours after breakfast. Use the minimum effective dose, adjusting it individually to achieve an adequate response. A dose of 18.75 mg once daily may be appropriate for some patients, and in some cases, 18.75 mg twice daily may be preferable. Avoid taking this medicine late at night because it may cause insomnia. This medicine should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of improper use of this medicine, treatment may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants. It must only be used for a short period to control exogenous obesity. It is not recommended to take this medication with other drugs aimed at weight loss, as safety and efficacy have not been established. If symptoms such as difficulty breathing, angina, fainting, or leg swelling occur during treatment, the doctor should be notified immediately. If such symptoms arise, the medication should be discontinued. Long-term high-dose use or concomitant use with other appetite suppressants may present risks related to heart valve disease. Individuals with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, mental health conditions, or a history of substance abuse should not take this medication. Children under 16 years of age and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should also avoid this medication. Diabetic patients should observe caution, as insulin dose adjustments may be necessary. The initial dose of this medication should start at the lowest amount, and even if tolerance develops, the dose should not be increased; treatment should be halted. Sudden discontinuation can result in severe fatigue and depression. Since it can affect the central nervous system, caution is needed when driving or operating dangerous machinery. Avoid taking with alcohol, as dangerous interactions may occur. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use this medication carefully and after consultation with a physician. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as anxiety, stupor, seizures, and heart problems may appear, necessitating immediate emergency treatment. Keep out of the reach of children. This medication is classified as a narcotic with potential for dependence and abuse, so it should be used according to a doctor's direction. Long-term use may lead to psychiatric symptoms or serious side effects, hence caution is warranted.
