Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in exogenous obesity
This medication is used for patients with exogenous obesity who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher and for those with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia with a BMI of 27 or higher, who do not respond to appropriate dietary and exercise regimens. It is primarily used as a short-term adjunct to fundamental weight-loss methods such as exercise, behavioral modification, and calorie restriction. Additionally, this medication should be used alone without concomitant appetite suppressants for it to be effective. It can help in weight management by calculating BMI based on the patient's height and weight. Therefore, it is used to improve obesity-related risk factors through effective weight loss.
Adults: Administer 37.5 mg of phentermine hydrochloride orally once daily, before breakfast or 1 ~ 2 hours after breakfast. Use the lowest effective dose and adjust it individually to achieve an adequate response. For some patients, 18.75 mg once daily may be appropriate; in some cases, taking 18.75 mg twice daily may be preferable. Avoid taking this medicine late at night because it may cause insomnia. This medicine is for short-term use (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of inappropriate use of this medicine, treatment may continue if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants and should only be used alone for a short duration. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established when used in combination with other drugs for weight loss. As it may be associated with a rare heart disease called primary pulmonary hypertension, any symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, chest pain, fainting, or leg swelling should be reported to a doctor immediately. It may also be associated with heart valve disease, though this is rarely reported when used alone. Patients with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, mental anxiety disorders, and a history of substance abuse should not take this medication. Women who are pregnant or might become pregnant, children under 16 years of age, and patients with certain genetic lactose metabolism disorders should also avoid this medication. Diabetic patients may need to adjust their insulin dosage when taking this medication, and those with mild hypertension should use it with caution. This medication can cause side effects such as increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, anxiety, insomnia, headache, gastrointestinal disturbances, rash, and changes in sexual function. Treatment should start with the minimum dose to avoid overdose, and sudden discontinuation after long-term use at high doses may lead to fatigue and depression. Caution is needed when performing activities requiring motor skills, such as operating machinery or driving. This medication may cause dangerous interactions if taken with alcohol and should not be taken together. Pregnant or nursing women should only use this medication if the benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus or infant. Overdose may result in severe symptoms such as anxiety, coma, seizures, hypertension, and vomiting, and appropriate treatment should be sought immediately in a medical institution. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and is classified as a controlled substance, with a potential for dependence and abuse. Long-term use may lead to chronic addiction symptoms such as mental disturbance, insomnia, irritability, and personality changes. The carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and reproductive toxicity of this medication have not yet been evaluated.
