  • Obesity
View approved original text

This drug is used as a short-term adjunct to calorie-restricted weight loss therapy in obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, or in patients with a BMI of 27 or greater who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia, when appropriate dietary management or exercise alone is insufficient. It should be taken alone, without the combination of other appetite suppressants. This medication helps patients achieve healthy weight management and improve risks associated with obesity.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults: Administer 25 mg of diethylpropion hydrochloride orally 3 times daily, 1 hour before meals. The maximum daily dose is 75 mg, and the medicine should be taken no later than 4 hours before bedtime. To minimize the potential for abuse, prescribe or dispense the lowest possible dose during the initial period (within 2 weeks), adjusting it individually to achieve an adequate response. This medicine is for short-term use (within 4 weeks). Precautions

This drug should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants. It should only be used alone for a short period, and combining it with other weight loss medications is not recommended as safety and efficacy are not established. During use, the weight loss effects are primarily observed early on, and when effects plateau, the dosage should not be increased, but use should be discontinued. Long-term use may lead to drug abuse and dependence, so it should be strictly limited. If psychological dependence occurs, the drug should be tapered off gradually, as sudden discontinuation may cause extreme fatigue, depression, and sleep disturbances. Severe symptoms of drug abuse may include insomnia, irritability, behavioral changes, and psychosis. If unexplained angina, fainting, leg swelling, or shortness of breath during exercise occurs, discontinue use immediately and check for pulmonary hypertension. This drug may rarely increase the risk of dangerous pulmonary hypertension, so caution is warranted. There is also a potential for valvular heart disease, so heart examinations should be conducted before treatment, and heart status should be monitored periodically during treatment. This drug should not be administered to the following patients: those taking MAO inhibitors or who have taken them recently, patients with severe hypertension or pulmonary hypertension, glaucoma patients, hyperthyroidism patients, patients with serious heart conditions, children under 16 years of age, and those with a history of drug or alcohol abuse. Patients with mild cardiovascular disease or hypertension, epilepsy, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and diabetes should be administered with caution, and dosage adjustments or discontinuation may be necessary. Common side effects of this drug include insomnia, irritability, dizziness, anxiety, restlessness, dry mouth, movement disorders, blurred vision, over-excitement, restlessness, abnormal euphoria, discomfort, depression, tremors, pupil dilation, drowsiness, lethargy, headaches, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, bad taste, dry mouth, stomatitis, other gastrointestinal disorders, erectile dysfunction, menstrual pain, changes in libido, and menstrual difficulties, gynecomastia, bone marrow suppression, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, and hypotension. Prolonged use can lead to withdrawal symptoms and psychological dependence, and high doses may cause hallucinations or psychotic symptoms, so dosage should be strictly adhered to. This drug affects the central nervous system, so caution is required when driving or operating hazardous machinery. There may be drug interactions, especially when used with general anesthetics, diabetes medications, anticoagulants, and anticonvulsants, so medical supervision is necessary. Use during pregnancy only when the treatment benefit noticeably outweighs the risks, and it is better to avoid use during breastfeeding. It is safer not to use this drug in children under 16 and elderly patients with impaired kidney function. In cases of overdose, symptoms may include anxiety, tremors, confusion, convulsions, cardiac irregularities, and gastrointestinal symptoms, and immediate medical attention is necessary. This drug should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in a sealed container. Since it is classified as a narcotic drug, potential for abuse and dependence must always be considered, and instructions from a physician should be followed during usage.
