Efficacy & effects

Nutritional improvement through the provision of energy and essential fatty acids

View approved original text

This medication is used as part of a non-oral nutritional supply regimen to provide energy and essential fatty acids necessary for the body. It helps improve the nutritional status of patients and maintain metabolic balance in the body.

How it is given

Adult administration

Generally, no more than 2 g of refined soybean oil is administered per day per kg of body weight (for 10%, 20 mL; for 20%, 10 mL). The infusion time should be over 3 hours. On the first day, for the initial injection only, administer no more than 1 g per kg of body weight. Adjust the intravenous infusion based on the patient's physiological metabolic status to meet the demand for essential fatty acids and calories.

Precautions

This medication should be used with caution in premature or low birth weight infants due to the possibility of increased free fatty acid levels in the blood. Particularly, there have been reports of fat accumulation in the pulmonary vasculature leading to fatal cases when intravenously administered to premature infants with severe respiratory disease, so it should be used with caution. It should not be administered to patients with thrombosis, severe liver dysfunction, severe coagulopathy, hyperlipidemia, diabetic patients with ketoacidosis, acute shock patients, and those with untreated electrolyte imbalances. Patients with a history of allergy to soybean oil, soybeans, peanuts, etc., should also not use this medication. Additional caution is warranted for patients with liver dysfunction, coagulation disorders, respiratory difficulties, acute bacterial sepsis, pregnant women, and patients with brain disorders. During administration, liver function and blood lipid levels, as well as blood status, should be regularly checked for abnormalities. In cases of overdose, abnormalities in fat metabolism may result in hyperlipidemia, fever, fat deposition, prolonged coagulation time, and in severe cases, coma, thus caution is necessary. This medication may diminish the effect of warfarin and can affect blood lipid breakdown when used with heparin. In particular, for newborns or premature infants, due to lower fat handling capacity, it should be infused slowly while monitoring blood fat levels. Elderly patients should also be used cautiously due to decreased bodily functions. This medication may affect some blood test results after administration, thus the timing of tests should be adjusted. Administration should be done only via slow intravenous infusion, as a rapid infusion may cause acute symptoms such as phlebitis, vascular pain, and respiratory distress. Do not mix with other medications and avoid using this medication for some time after administration of blood volume expanders. Maintain the infusion solution at an appropriate temperature, use it quickly after opening, and do not use products that have been previously frozen. Store at a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius in a sealed container to prevent air exposure and freezing.
