This medication is used for conditions that require prolonged maintenance of alkaline urine, such as urinary stones. It is also used as an adjunct therapy to help expel uric acid in gout treatment. Additionally, it assists in the treatment of acidosis caused by tubular dysfunction in the kidneys. Therefore, this drug is effectively used to improve conditions such as urinary stones, gout, and acidosis.
How to take
Adult dose
Dissolve 1 packet in at least 180 milliliters of water or juice and take 4 times a day after meals and before sleep, or as directed by a physician.
Child dose
Not recommended for children; if necessary, Eurositra liquid should be administered.
Precautions
This medication can cause hyperkalemia, where potassium levels in the body become too high, and alkalosis, where the blood becomes too alkaline, in patients with kidney disease if taken in excess. Caution should be exercised when taken with other potassium-containing medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or cardiac glycosides, as there is a risk of drug toxicity. The artificial sweetener aspartame included in this medication converts to phenylalanine in the body, so it should not be taken by patients with phenylketonuria, a genetic condition that requires phenylalanine restriction. This medication should also not be used in patients with severely impaired kidney function, Addison's disease, certain muscle diseases, severe abdominal pain, patients with little or no urine output, severe heart damage, hyperkalemia, and certain urinary tract infections. Generally, side effects are minimal in patients with normal kidney function, but those with decreased kidney function should have their potassium levels monitored regularly through blood tests, as potassium levels can become dangerously high. Symptoms such as lethargy, weakness, confusion, and tingling in the hands and feet may occur due to excess potassium; if these symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is advised. This medication can irritate the stomach, so it is best to take it well diluted in water and after meals. When taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) alongside, kidney function may be affected, hence potassium levels should be closely monitored. In case of overdose, potassium levels can rise dangerously high; hence, foods or medications rich in potassium should be avoided, and treatment such as intravenous insulin with glucose-containing solutions or dialysis may be necessary. Particular caution should be exercised in patients taking digoxin, as rapid changes in potassium levels can lead to cardiac toxicity.
