Improvement of Alzheimer's disease symptoms
This medication is used to slow the progression of symptoms of Alzheimer's type dementia and improve memory and cognitive function.
As Donepezil Hydrochloride, administer 5 mg once daily before bedtime. For 4 to 6 weeks, the dose of 5 mg is to be administered, after which the clinical response can be evaluated and the dose can be increased to 10 mg. If increasing to 10 mg per day, attention should be paid to gastrointestinal adverse reactions. For underweight female patients over 85 years of age, the daily dose should not exceed 5 mg, and careful monitoring is necessary due to the frequency of adverse reactions.
There is no experience of use in children.
This medication should not be used by patients who are allergic to certain medications or ingredients. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and those who are nursing should also avoid taking this medication. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic diseases should refrain from taking it. Patients with heart disease or cardiac conduction disorders should be careful with this medication as it may cause slowed heart rate or arrhythmias. Patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or with a history of peptic ulcers should use this medication cautiously to prevent gastrointestinal bleeding or worsening of ulcers. Patients with asthma or obstructive lung disease should be cautious as their symptoms may worsen due to bronchoconstriction or increased mucus secretion. Patients with extrapyramidal disorders such as Parkinson's disease should use this medication with caution due to the risk of worsening symptoms. Patients allergic to the dye contained in this medication should also take it carefully. This medication can cause serious adverse reactions such as fainting, heart problems, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver dysfunction, cerebrovascular issues, movement disorders, and respiratory distress; if symptoms occur, consult medical personnel immediately. Additionally, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, insomnia, and hallucinations are reported relatively frequently, so patients should inform if these symptoms persist. This medication is used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and is not approved for other forms of dementia or memory disorders. Treatment should be conducted under the diagnosis and supervision of a specialist, and if there is no therapeutic effect, discontinuation should be considered. Patients with heart disease or electrolyte abnormalities may have a risk of arrhythmia, so regular electrocardiogram checks may be necessary. Caution is needed when driving or operating machinery as dizziness or drowsiness may occur. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers, especially if taking heart medications, antibiotics, antidepressants, or anti-inflammatory analgesics. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid this medication, and must only take it after consulting with healthcare providers if absolutely necessary. The safety in children has not been established, so this medication is not used in pediatric patients. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, reduced heart rate, and respiratory depression may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment.
