Treatment of kidney disease in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes
This medication effectively lowers blood pressure in patients with hypertension, helping to reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications. It is specifically used to prevent the progression of kidney disease and protect kidney function in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is used as a medication to assist in the treatment of hypertension and related kidney diseases.
This medication can be taken regardless of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time every day. For adults with hypertension, the initial and maintenance dosage is recommended as 50 mg of losartan potassium orally once daily. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect is observed 3 to 6 weeks after starting treatment. If the treatment effect is insufficient, the same dose can be administered as 25 mg twice daily or, if necessary, increased to 100 mg once daily.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older weighing between 20 kg and less than 50 kg, the recommended dosage is 25 mg once daily, which can be increased to a maximum of 50 mg once daily. For patients weighing 50 kg or more.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. The risks of taking this medication during pregnancy include decreased fetal lung development, skeletal malformations, and impaired kidney function. Patients who are allergic to this medication or have severe liver dysfunction or certain genetic disorders should not take it. Elderly patients and those with impaired kidney function or high serum potassium levels should use this medication with caution. Since this medication lowers blood pressure, symptoms of hypotension and changes in kidney function should be monitored regularly. Dizziness or symptoms of orthostatic hypotension may occur while taking this medication, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Taking potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements may dangerously elevate blood potassium levels, so consultation with a doctor is necessary before use. Co-administration with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may reduce the drug's efficacy or cause problems with kidney function. Occasionally, side effects such as angioedema, hepatitis, myalgia, and dry cough may occur, so any unusual symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare provider immediately. This medication is not recommended for children under 6 years old or for pediatric patients with severe kidney dysfunction. It is important to regularly check blood pressure and conduct blood tests and kidney function tests while taking this medication. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should consult a doctor, and breastfeeding women should also avoid taking it if possible. Overdose may lead to hypotension and arrhythmias, so it is crucial to adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, and in emergencies, seek medical attention immediately.
