Treatment of male-pattern baldness
This medication is used to treat male-pattern baldness, specifically androgenetic alopecia, in adult males, particularly those aged 18 to 41 years. Male-pattern baldness occurs due to the influence of male hormones, and this drug helps slow down hair loss progression and promotes hair growth, thereby aiding in the improvement of hair loss. Continuous use is expected to yield effectiveness, and it is effective in alleviating hair loss symptoms.
Typically, finasteride is administered orally at a dose of 1 mg once daily, without regard to meals. Generally, treatment effects can be observed after at least 3 months of use, and it is recommended to continue taking it to maintain treatment effects. Treatment duration and effectiveness should be continuously evaluated. If treatment is discontinued, therapeutic effects will dissipate within 12 months.
This medication should not be used by children or women. In particular, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not handle broken pieces of this drug, as its components can be absorbed through the skin and harm male fetuses. Mood changes or depression may occur during treatment with this drug; therefore, if these symptoms appear, medical consultation should be sought immediately. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not take this medication, and patients with hypersensitivity or those currently taking other 5α-reductase inhibitors should also refrain from using this drug. Patients with impaired liver function should use this medication cautiously, as adverse reactions such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders have been reported. If these symptoms occur, the treatment should be discontinued and a physician consulted. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance should not take it. During treatment, any unusual signs such as lumps or pain in the breasts or nipple discharge should be reported to a healthcare professional immediately. Furthermore, this drug may affect prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, so caution is needed when interpreting PSA test results. There is no specific treatment for overdose, but serious side effects may occur, so caution is warranted. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it is advisable not to transfer it to another container. Finally, while this drug has relatively few drug interactions, it is safe to consult with a healthcare professional when used with other medications.
