This medication is used to treat mild to moderate essential hypertension, also known as primary hypertension.

How to take

Adult dose

As Lercanidipine Hydrochloride, take 5 to 10 mg orally once daily at least 15 minutes before meals. The dose may be increased to 20 mg depending on the patient's symptoms. Dose adjustment requires 2 weeks to clearly observe the maximum antihypertensive effect, so it should be done gradually.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. Patients with allergies to this or similar medications, pregnant women or women of childbearing potential, and breastfeeding women should not take this medication. Additionally, it is not to be administered to patients with severe cardiac disease, those with severely impaired liver or kidney function, recent myocardial infarction patients, dialysis patients, and children or adolescents under 18 years of age. This medication contains lactose and should not be used in patients with specific genetic issues such as lactose intolerance. Caution is required when using this medication in some patients. Patients with heart rhythm issues, decreased left ventricular function, ischemic heart disease, mild to moderate renal or liver dysfunction, history of angina, frequent alcohol consumption, and elderly patients need to be careful when taking this medication. Various side effects may occur when taking this medication. Common side effects include facial flushing or swelling, rapid heartbeat, headache, dizziness, fatigue, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc. Regular liver function tests are necessary as liver dysfunction may occur, and if abnormalities are found, the treatment should be stopped. Rarely reported side effects include gingival hypertrophy, skin rash, and myalgia. Discontinuation of this medication should be gradual to prevent worsening symptoms, and care is needed during driving or operating machinery due to dizziness or drowsiness. This medication is metabolized by specific enzymes in the liver; therefore, care should be taken when taken with medications that inhibit or activate these enzymes. Drug concentration changes may occur when used with some antifungals, antibiotics, immunosuppressants, and antiepileptics, leading to side effects or diminished effectiveness. Additionally, taking it with grapefruit juice can increase blood concentrations, so it is advisable to avoid them together. Taking it with alcohol may excessively lower blood pressure, thus it should be avoided. It is safest for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to take this medication and to ensure proper contraception.
