Weight loss adjunct therapy for patients with obesity (including body mass index and risk factors)
This medication is used as an adjunct for obese patients who do not respond adequately to basic dietary or exercise therapy. It is particularly suitable for those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 or higher who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia. The medication aids in short-term weight loss in the treatment of exogenous obesity, based on caloric restriction. Additionally, it is important that this medication is used alone and not in combination with other appetite suppressants. The appropriate candidates for treatment can be determined through the calculation of BMI using the patient's height and weight. In summary, this medication is used to improve weight loss in patients with exogenous obesity.
For phendimetrazine tartrate, take 35 mg once, 2 to 3 times a day, orally before meals by 1 hour. The dosage should provide the minimum effective dose and should be adjusted individually. In some patients, 17.5 mg once a day may be appropriate. Do not exceed 70 mg in one dose or take more than three times a day. Administration should be for a short term (within 4 weeks), and satisfactory weight loss should occur within the first 4 weeks.
This medication should not be taken in combination with other appetite suppressants due to the risk of serious heart disease. It should be used alone for short-term treatment of exogenous obesity, as combining it with other weight loss medications is not recommended due to unverified safety and efficacy. Long-term use for more than three months should be avoided due to the potential increased risk of life-threatening pulmonary hypertension, and should the symptoms like shortness of breath or chest pain occur, the medication must be immediately discontinued and a doctor’s evaluation is necessary. Patients should undergo heart examinations before administration due to the risk linked to heart valve disease, and those with existing heart murmurs or valve diseases should not use this medication. Patients sensitive to sympathomimetic stimulation or those with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, or glaucoma should not take this medication, and it should also be avoided by those with mental anxiety or a history of drug abuse. Children under 16 years of age, as well as pregnant women or those who might become pregnant, should not take this medication. Patients with mild hypertension, nursing mothers, or those with diabetes should use this medication cautiously, and diabetic patients may require insulin dosage adjustments. This medication can cause rapid heart rate or elevated blood pressure and may lead to side effects such as anxiety, dizziness, insomnia, and headache, so attention is required. If tolerance develops to the appetite-suppressing effects, the dosage should not be increased, and use should be discontinued. Caution is also needed when driving or operating machinery. In case of overdose, symptoms such as severe anxiety, coma, seizures, and fluctuations in blood pressure may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. This medication is classified as a narcotic, which poses a risk of abuse, and sudden discontinuation after prolonged high-dose use can lead to severe fatigue and depression, hence it must be taken strictly under a doctor’s instruction. Store out of reach of children and use with caution after consulting a doctor if pregnant or nursing.
