View approved original text

This medication is used as a short-term adjunct treatment for obese patients in the early stages who do not respond to appropriate dietary and exercise therapy. It is especially recommended for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or for those with a BMI of 27 or higher who also have accompanying risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia. It aids in the treatment of exogenous obesity that is based on calorie restriction, and it should only be taken alone without the use of other appetite suppressants. The patient's BMI is calculated by dividing their weight (kg) by the square of their height (m), which helps determine the need for treatment. This medication effectively assists in weight loss to improve obesity.

Precautions

This medication may cause serious heart problems if used with other appetite suppressants, so it must be used alone and only for a short period. Long-term use of this medication significantly increases the risk of a rare disease called pulmonary arterial hypertension, so if symptoms such as shortness of breath or angina occur, the patient should immediately stop taking the medication and seek medical care. Those with heart valve issues or heart murmurs should avoid using this medication, and it is important to accurately assess heart condition before administration. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain diseases or conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, individuals with mental anxiety states, and those with a history of substance abuse. Children under 16 years of age and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication. As this medication affects the central nervous system, it can cause symptoms such as anxiety, headache, and insomnia, so caution is needed when performing tasks that require concentration, such as driving or operating machinery. Diabetic patients may need to adjust their insulin dosage while taking this medication, so they should consult their physician. In cases of overdose, severe symptoms such as extreme anxiety, coma, seizures, abnormal blood pressure, and vomiting may occur, so immediate emergency treatment is necessary. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and due to the risk of drug dependence, it should be taken exactly as directed by a doctor. It is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to take this medication; if necessary, they must consult a physician.
