This medication is used to replenish the deficient components when there is a lack of water and electrolytes, especially sodium and chloride. It is also used for dissolving or diluting injectables. It helps to maintain the balance of body water and electrolytes and aids in the smooth administration of injectables.

How it is given

Adult administration

Administer generally 20–1,000 mL of sodium chloride subcutaneously, intravenously, via drip IV, or rectally. Adjust the dosage and infusion rate appropriately according to age, weight, and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication may have glass particles mixed in when using ampoule injectables, so care must be taken when cutting the container. Extra caution is required when administering to children or the elderly. This medication should not be used in patients with hypernatremia, fluid overload, or those with cirrhosis accompanied by edema or ascites. Patients with heart or circulatory problems, kidney disorders, hypoproteinemia, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, and hyperchloremia should use it cautiously. Additionally, patients with peripheral or pulmonary edema, preeclampsia, hyperaldosteronism, and those undergoing corticosteroid treatment, as well as children and the elderly, also require attention. Administering this medication in large volumes or rapidly can lead to adverse effects such as congestive heart failure, edema, acidosis, and serum electrolyte imbalances. There may also be adverse reactions such as infection or pain at the injection site, phlebitis, thrombosis, extravasation, and fluid overload, so if these symptoms occur, administration should be stopped immediately and appropriate care sought. During treatment, regular clinical evaluations and laboratory tests are necessary to check the patient's fluid balance, electrolyte concentrations, and acid-base balance changes. Elderly patients require special attention as their body functions may be impaired, so the infusion rate should be slowed and dosages reduced accordingly. This medication is administered intravenously, and in preparation, normal saline solution should be used as the diluent, with 50 mL or 100 mL being optimal. During the dissolution process, the sterilization label should be removed, and the plastic bottle should be connected to the vial to add the diluent, shaking until fully dissolved, then connecting it to the infusion set. Before administration, check for color change or the presence of precipitate or crystallization in the solution, and disinfect the patient's skin and the equipment to prevent infection. In cold weather, warm it to body temperature prior to use, and after opening, it should be used immediately, with any remaining medication discarded. When replenishing water or electrolyte deficiency, the capsule part should be removed and injected slowly, and the dissolved and diluted injectable should be administered according to the prescribed dosage and frequency.
