Treatment of hypertension and nephropathy (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication helps in controlling blood pressure in patients with hypertension and is used particularly for the treatment of nephropathy that can occur in patients with type 2 diabetes. It contributes to lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications, and protecting kidney function.
For adults with hypertension, the recommended initial and maintenance dose of losartan potassium is 50 mg orally once daily. The maximum blood pressure lowering effect appears 3 to 6 weeks after starting treatment. If the treatment effect is insufficient, the same dose can be administered twice daily, or if necessary, increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older weighing between 20 kg and 50 kg, the recommended dose is 25 mg once daily, and it can be increased to a maximum of 50 mg once daily. For patients weighing over 50 kg, the dosage may vary.
This medication can cause serious harm or death to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters, so it must be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. This medication should not be used in patients with certain allergic reactions, severely impaired liver function, during pregnancy or in women who may become pregnant, and in patients with hereditary angioedema. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function and patients with hyperkalemia should exercise increased caution when using this medication, and there is a risk of sudden drops in blood pressure, so particular care is needed during the initial administration. Although this medication has been generally safe in clinical trials, side effects such as dizziness, headaches, muscle pain, cough, and dyspepsia may occur. Rarely, severe side effects such as angioedema, liver dysfunction, and renal failure have also been reported. Taking this medication with other antihypertensive agents, potassium-sparing diuretics, or potassium supplements may cause dangerously high potassium levels in the blood, so co-administration should be avoided. The effectiveness of blood pressure control may be reduced or kidney function may deteriorate when taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs concurrently. Pregnant or nursing women are advised not to take this medication, and if it must be taken, they should consult a doctor and closely monitor the condition of the fetus and neonate. This medication should not be given to pediatric patients under 6 years of age or children with severely impaired kidney function, and caution should be exercised regarding the occurrence of adverse reactions in the elderly. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension and bradycardia may occur, and appropriate medical treatment must be received immediately. This medication is not removed by hemodialysis. While taking this medication, patients who are planning to become pregnant or are already pregnant must consult healthcare providers, and potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium should not be taken without consulting a doctor.
