This medication is used to treat osteoporosis in both postmenopausal women and men.

How to take

Adult dose

As sodium alendronate, take 70 mg once a week in the morning with a sufficient amount of water (170–230 mL) at least 30 minutes before food, beverages, or other medications. After taking it, do not lie down for at least 30 minutes and remain upright until the first food intake. This medication should be taken upon waking in the morning and should not be taken before bed or prior to getting up. If a dose is missed,

Precautions

This medication can cause irritation to the stomach and esophagus, so patients with upper gastrointestinal disorders should be particularly cautious. Symptoms such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcer, and esophageal erosion may occur, and in severe cases, it can lead to esophageal obstruction or perforation; if symptoms occur, the intake should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted. When taking this medication, it should be taken with a sufficient amount of water, and for at least 30 minutes after taking it, one should not lie down to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation. Patients with conditions that delay esophageal emptying, those unable to remain seated or standing for more than 30 minutes, patients with hypocalcemia, severe renal failure, pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication. During the intake of this medication, adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is necessary, and musculoskeletal adverse reactions such as bone, muscle, and joint pain may occur. Gastrointestinal adverse reactions such as nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, constipation, diarrhea, and acid reflux have also been reported; if symptoms are severe, one should consult a doctor. This medication may interact with certain drugs, so calcium supplements or antacids should be taken at least 30 minutes apart, and the risk of gastrointestinal adverse reactions may increase when taken with aspirin. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and nursing mothers should not use this medication, and the safety for children and adolescents under the age of 18 has not been established. Elderly patients can take this medication, but some elderly may be more sensitive to drugs, so caution is required. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypocalcemia and gastrointestinal irritation may appear, so it is important to adhere to the prescribed dosage, and in case of overdose, do not induce vomiting but visit a medical institution immediately.
