This medication is primarily used for surface anesthesia. In dentistry, it is utilized before injections or during dental impressions, X-ray imaging, and tartar removal. In otolaryngology, it is used in simple surgical procedures and puncture cases such as maxillary sinus puncture, nasal, and pharyngeal treatments. It is effective for surface anesthesia during the insertion of bronchial and gastrointestinal instruments or catheters, such as during endotracheal intubation, laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, and esophagoscopy. Additionally, in obstetrics, it is used as an analgesic adjunct during the final stages of labor, perineal incision, and perineal suturing. It is utilized for improving surface anesthesia in various fields.

Precautions

This medication is an amide local anesthetic and should not be used in patients with allergies to this drug or similar agents. Caution should be exercised in patients with wounds or infections on mucous membranes, epilepsy, cardiac conduction abnormalities, liver dysfunction, severe shock, renal failure, elderly patients, and those with a generalized debility. Patients should be closely monitored during the use of this medication as serious side effects such as shock symptoms, hypotension, and respiratory depression may occur. Central nervous system side effects such as tremors, seizures, drowsiness, anxiety, dizziness, nausea may manifest, and if any abnormal symptoms occur, use should be immediately discontinued and appropriate treatment sought. Symptoms of cardiac suppression may also emerge, thus careful monitoring of cardiac conditions is essential. Allergic reactions such as skin rash or edema may rarely occur. This drug may irritate mucous membranes, and it may not be effective for pain prevention during endotracheal intubation; thus, understanding this is necessary. Excessive use may lead to systemic toxicity, so strict adherence to dosage and administration intervals must be maintained. In areas with mucous membrane damage, increased drug absorption may heighten the risk of side effects, requiring caution. When sprayed in the mouth or throat, difficulty in swallowing may increase the risk of aspiration, and decreased sensation of the tongue or oral mucosa may result in the risk of biting the mouth, so care is needed. When used in conjunction with other specific cardiac medications, the cardiac effects may be amplified, hence close observation by a healthcare professional is needed. For women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, this drug should only be administered if the benefits significantly outweigh the risks.
