Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication is used to control blood pressure in hypertensive patients. It also aids in the treatment of kidney disease that may occur in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes. In other words, it helps manage blood pressure to prevent deterioration of kidney function and improve overall health. Therefore, it is effectively used to treat hypertension and related kidney complications.
For the treatment of hypertension, losartan potassium is administered orally at a dose of 50 mg once daily. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, it may be divided and administered twice daily or increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily. In the case of kidney disease in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes, it is typically administered at 50 mg once daily, with an increase to a maximum of 100 mg once daily depending on blood pressure. If there are concerns about excessive blood pressure reduction, an initial dose of 25 mg is recommended.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and over, weighing between 20 kg and less than 50 kg, administer 25 mg once daily, with a maximum increase to 50 mg once daily depending on blood pressure response. For those weighing 50 kg or more
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters; therefore, it should not be taken by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. This medication should not be administered to patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, patients with specific genetic disorders, or patients who have allergies to this medication or its components. Elderly patients or those with high potassium levels, liver disease, or heart disease should use this medication with caution, particularly if they have severe kidney impairment. Because this medication lowers blood pressure, it may cause dizziness or hypotension, so care should be taken when driving or operating machinery. During treatment, regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels (especially potassium) is required to check for any abnormalities. Taking this medication along with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements may dangerously increase potassium levels in the blood, so co-administration of these medications is not recommended. Co-administration with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may reduce the blood pressure-lowering effect of this medication or cause problems with kidney function, so caution is advised. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension and rapid heart rate may occur, and immediate medical attention is required. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant must consult a physician before taking this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed during treatment, the medication should be stopped immediately. It is advisable for breastfeeding women to discontinue breastfeeding if they take this medication. During treatment with this medication, it is important to adhere to the prescribed dosage and administration schedule as directed by a physician. Keep out of reach of children and avoid transferring to other containers.
