This medication is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men. Osteoporosis is a condition where bone density decreases, leading to an increased risk of fractures, and this drug helps strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures. Therefore, it is effective in preventing fractures due to osteoporosis.

How to take

Adult dose

As Sodium Alendronate, take 70 mg once a week in the morning with a sufficient amount of water (170 to 230 mL) at least 30 minutes before food, beverages, or other medications. After taking, do not lie down for at least 30 minutes and until the first intake of food. Take it immediately upon waking up, and do not take it before bed or again upon waking. If you forget to take on the scheduled day, take it the next morning.

Precautions

This drug can irritate the gastric mucosa, so patients with gastrointestinal issues such as esophageal diseases, gastritis, or duodenitis should be cautious. After taking, serious side effects such as esophagitis or esophageal ulcers may occur, so if symptoms such as dysphagia, chest pain, or heartburn develop, immediately stop taking the medication and consult a doctor. Take with a sufficient amount of water and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking. To reduce esophageal irritation, do not chew or suck on the tablet, and take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Since the efficacy of this drug may decrease with inadequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, it is advisable to take supplements if necessary. Particularly, patients with severely impaired kidney function, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and patients with certain genetic disorders should not take this drug. Additionally, this drug may cause side effects such as bone, muscle, or joint pain, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, nausea, etc., so consult a doctor if symptoms are severe. Do not take this drug together with calcium supplements or antacids; maintain at least a 30-minute interval. The risk of gastrointestinal irritation may increase when used concurrently with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, so caution is necessary. Safety and efficacy have not been established for children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Elderly patients can take this drug; however, some elderly individuals may be more sensitive to medications, so caution is advised. In case of overdose, symptoms like hypocalcemia and gastrointestinal disturbances may occur, so immediately visit a medical facility. This drug should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
