Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is used to assist dietary and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone, and if blood glucose control is insufficient with oral hypoglycemic agents, it can be used in combination with insulin. Additionally, if the effect of sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy is inadequate, it may be used in combination with metformin to help control blood sugar. This medication effectively enhances blood sugar management, providing positive assistance in diabetes treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

Dosage should be adjusted for each patient individually. Administer once daily orally, before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. For patients who have not previously received medication, start with 1 mg once daily of Glymepiride. If needed, the dosage may be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks, and generally, there is little additional effect beyond 4 mg, although some patients may show better metabolic control at 6 mg or 8 mg.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or in a state of coma. Additionally, patients with allergies to this medication or components contained within it, as well as sulfonylurea drugs, should not take this medication. There have not been experiences using this medication in patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, thus it is recommended to transition to insulin treatment in such cases. It is safer for women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding not to take this medication. For patients with severe infections, those undergoing surgery, or those with severe trauma, it is advisable to use insulin therapy. In cases of gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting, caution is needed as food absorption may be poor, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose, so it should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic issues. In the first week of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is high; thus, careful monitoring is particularly important for elderly patients or those with poor nutritional status or who skip meals, as well as those with impaired kidney or liver function, or those taking other medications, as they are at increased risk of hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, severe hunger, fatigue, confusion, and decreased consciousness; if these symptoms occur, sugar should be ingested immediately. This medication may cause various side effects, including liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions, so if any abnormal signs appear, consult a physician immediately. It is important to combine dietary management and exercise therapy with this medication for blood sugar control, and rapidly consume sugar if hypoglycemia occurs. When receiving treatment at another hospital, it is essential to inform them of this medication use, and in stressful situations, surgery, or infections that can destabilize blood sugar, transitioning temporarily to insulin treatment may be necessary. This medication is excreted through the kidneys, so dosage adjustments are needed for elderly patients, and in cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur requiring immediate emergency treatment. When storing, keep it out of reach of children and store it in its original container for safety.
