This medication is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men. Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weak and at increased risk of fractures. This medication helps to increase bone strength and prevent fractures.

How to take

Adult dose

As Alendronate, take 70 mg once a week in the morning with a sufficient amount of water at least 30 minutes before consuming food, beverages or other medications. This medication should be taken immediately after waking up, and it should be swallowed with enough water (170-230 mL) to rapidly reach the stomach and reduce the risk of esophageal irritation. After taking, one should remain upright for at least 30 minutes and until the first food intake.

Precautions

This medication can irritate the mucous membranes of the esophagus and stomach, so patients with esophageal diseases, gastritis, duodenitis, or ulcers should take it with caution. After administration, symptoms such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, dysphagia, chest pain, and heartburn may occur, so if these symptoms appear, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor. When taking this medication, it is important to take it with a sufficient amount of water and to avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes post-ingestion, maintaining proper posture during administration is also crucial. Continuing to take the medication after experiencing symptoms of esophageal irritation may lead to serious esophageal issues, so caution is needed. Patients with esophageal strictures or achalasia causing delayed esophageal clearance, those unable to sit or stand upright for more than 30 minutes, patients allergic to this drug or its components, those with hypocalcemia, severe renal impairment, pregnant or nursing women, and patients with certain hereditary lactose intolerance should not take this medication. While taking, side effects such as indigestion, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, musculoskeletal pain, headache may occur, and rarely skin rashes or severe esophageal damage have been reported. This medication may interfere with the absorption of calcium or antacids, so it is advisable to space the dosage at least 30 minutes apart. Before taking, check for any mineral metabolism abnormalities such as hypocalcemia, and if needed, calcium and vitamin D supplements may be required. Long-term use may increase the risk of stress fractures in bones, so if any unusual symptoms occur, consult a doctor. It is safest for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant to avoid this medication, as well as nursing mothers.
