This medication is used to improve symptoms in adults with atherosclerotic diseases such as ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and peripheral artery disease. It also helps alleviate symptoms by reducing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke due to cardiovascular abnormalities in patients with acute coronary syndrome. In patients with atrial fibrillation who have a low risk of bleeding and where vitamin K antagonists are not appropriate, this medication reduces the risk of stroke and thromboembolism, thereby improving health. In summary, this medication is used to improve symptoms of various cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases associated with atherosclerosis and effectively manage the patient's condition by reducing the risk of thrombosis.

How to take

Adult dose

For patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral artery disease, Clopidogrel should be administered orally at a dose of 75 mg once daily. For patients with acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina or non-Q-wave myocardial infarction), a loading dose of 300 mg should be administered orally on the first day of treatment, followed by a maintenance dose of 75 mg once daily. During this time, aspirin 75–325 mg should also be taken once daily.

Precautions

This medication helps prevent platelets from clumping together, promoting better blood flow. When taking this medication, patients with decreased CYP2C19 enzyme function, which is responsible for drug metabolism, may experience reduced effectiveness; in such cases, treatment methods should be adjusted in consultation with a physician. Additionally, concomitant use of drugs that increase CYP2C19 enzyme activity may raise the active ingredient concentration of this medication and increase bleeding risk; thus, such combinations should be avoided. Patients with an allergy to this medication or its components, those with bleeding conditions, severe liver impairment, nursing women, and patients with certain genetic issues such as lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients at high risk of bleeding, those with poor liver or kidney function, recent stroke patients, hypertensive patients, elderly patients, and underweight patients should use this medication with caution and inform their doctor immediately if bleeding symptoms occur. In particular, patients scheduled for surgery should discontinue this medication 5 to 7 days prior to surgery and resume only after proper hemostasis post-surgery. This medication may increase bleeding risk when taken with other anticoagulants; therefore, patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist if they are taking other medications. While taking this medication, bleeding may take longer to stop, so if symptoms such as cuts or nosebleeds persist, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. This medication may rarely cause serious blood disorders characterized by a rapid decrease in platelet count; thus, if symptoms such as fever, fatigue, or easy bruising or bleeding appear, patients should visit the hospital immediately. Mild side effects such as headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rash may occur, but they are mostly mild; however, if symptoms are severe or persistent, patients should consult healthcare professionals. During pregnancy, it should be used cautiously, except in emergencies, and nursing mothers should discuss the possibility of drug secretion into breast milk with their doctor. Safety in children has not been established, therefore it should not be used in children. Overdose may increase the risk of bleeding, hence dosage must be strictly adhered to, and if overdose occurs, healthcare professionals should be notified immediately. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it is recommended not to transfer it to another container.
