This medication is used for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, including initial and recurrent genital herpes and cold sores. It alleviates the symptoms of infections caused by the herpes simplex virus and helps in the recovery of lesions. Patients can expect relief from symptoms and therapeutic benefits through this medication. It is actively utilized to effectively manage herpes simplex infections, thus aiding in symptom improvement.

How to use

Adult use

Apply to the affected area 5 times a day at approximately 4-hour intervals. Treatment should continue for 5 days, and if not improved after 5 days of use, it may be used for an additional 5 days.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic or hypersensitive to this drug or its components, as well as those sensitive to chemicals, should not use this medication. It is also advisable not to administer this drug to breastfeeding women and children. Patients with weakened immunity, such as those with AIDS or those who have undergone a bone marrow transplant, should use this medication with extra caution. This medication contains an ingredient called propylene glycol, and patients allergic or hypersensitive to this component should be cautious as well. If this medication is used in the presence of ulcers in the genital area, patients may experience pain or discomfort. Additionally, temporary burning sensations or mild pain, dermatitis, erythematous rashes, eczema, allergic reactions, irritation, itching, skin depigmentation, hives, rashes, and small blisters may occur. The skin may become red or itchy, and dryness or peeling may also occur. It is better to start treatment as soon as possible, and in case of recurrence, it is advisable to begin treatment immediately when symptoms first appear. Compliance with prescribed dosages, administration routes, and treatment durations is essential, and this medication should not be used by individuals without symptoms or signs of infection. Furthermore, this medication is not intended to prevent infections in other people or recurrent herpes simplex infections. Although the possibility of developing resistance to this medication cannot be completely excluded, caution should be exercised, and it should not be diluted or mixed with other medications. Interactions with other medications related to this drug are not clearly known; however, when acyclovir is systemically administered, it may increase its concentration in the body when used with a drug called probenecid. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication if the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. Despite no observed teratogenic effects in animal studies, caution is required as high doses may lead to fetal abnormalities. It is advisable not to breastfeed during the use of this medication since it may be secreted in breast milk. Safety and efficacy in children have not been sufficiently established; hence, use in pediatric populations is not recommended. This medication should only be applied topically to the skin and should not be used in the eyes or mucous membranes. Care should be taken to avoid applying this medication to mucous membranes such as the mouth, eyes, or vagina as it may cause irritation. Additionally, it is preferable to apply it using gloves to prevent spreading to other areas or to other people.
