Improvement of symptoms and urinary flow of benign prostatic hyperplasia, reduction of surgical necessity
This medication helps improve the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. As the enlarged prostate reduces, urinary flow becomes smoother, and the frequency of acute urinary retention decreases. It also reduces the necessity for surgeries such as transurethral resection of the prostate or prostatectomy. This has a significant effect on reducing discomfort in daily life and facilitating disease management. Therefore, it is used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
As finasteride, take 5 mg once daily orally without regard to meals. Even if symptoms improve, a minimum treatment duration of 6 months is required.
This medication should not be used in children and women. In particular, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle broken or crushed tablets as this medication may affect male fetuses. During the use of this medication, symptoms of depression or mood changes may occur, and if such symptoms arise, you should consult a healthcare professional immediately. Do not use if you have an allergy to this medication or have certain hereditary lactose-related diseases. Patients with liver function issues should use this medication with caution. Generally, this medication has few side effects and is tolerable, but problems related to sexual function (such as erectile dysfunction, reduced libido, ejaculation issues, etc.) may occur, so caution is needed. Rare reports of male breast cancer have been noted with long-term use, but a direct association is not yet clear. There are no known special interactions with other medications, and it can generally be taken with most cardiovascular medications or anti-inflammatory analgesics without significant issues. Pregnant women or nursing mothers should not take this medication, and particularly pregnant women should exercise caution due to the risk of genital anomalies in male fetuses. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so it is not used. Elderly patients can use this without special dose adjustments. This medication can lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, potentially affecting test results, so it is important to have regular check-ups as directed by a physician. There is no specific antidote for overdose, but reported adverse reactions are rare. Keep this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to other containers.
