Efficacy & effects

Improvement of postprandial hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus

  • Postprandial hyperglycemia in diabetes
View approved original text

This medication helps improve postprandial hyperglycemia in diabetic patients who are undergoing dietary and exercise therapy but are not achieving sufficient blood sugar control. Additionally, it may be used as an adjunct for patients who are already using oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin preparations but are not achieving adequate effects. Thus, this medication effectively improves postprandial hyperglycemia that is difficult to control with existing treatment methods.

How to take

Adult dose

Since efficacy and tolerability vary among patients, the physician must determine the dose according to the patient's condition. The usual dosage is as follows. Adults are usually administered voglibose 0.2mg orally 3 times daily before each meal. If the effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased to 0.3mg per dose while carefully monitoring the patient's progress.

Precautions

This medication may cause hypoglycemic symptoms when used with other diabetes treatments, so it should be started at a low dose and gradually increased. This medication slows the digestion and absorption of sugars, so in the event of hypoglycemia, glucose should be given instead of sugar. Patients should be thoroughly informed about hypoglycemic symptoms and how to manage them. It should not be used in patients with severe ketoacidosis or diabetic coma, those with severe infections or after major surgery, and those with allergies to the components of this medication. Careful administration is required for patients with a history of abdominal surgery, intestinal obstruction, chronic intestinal diseases, specific intestinal disorders, or severe liver or kidney dysfunction. While taking this medication, patients may experience abdominal distension or increased gas, and rarely, symptoms of intestinal obstruction may appear. If any abnormal symptoms occur, consultation with healthcare professionals should be done immediately. Liver function may be affected, so liver function tests and symptom monitoring are necessary, and if abnormalities are found, the administration should be discontinued. This medication is used only in cases where blood sugar regulation is difficult for diabetes patients despite dietary and exercise therapy, and blood sugar should be regularly monitored even after starting treatment. When used together with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents, there is a risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, the dose must be adjusted and used with caution. Older adults may have reduced physical function, so they should start at a low dose and closely monitor blood sugar and gastrointestinal symptoms during administration. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the risks and benefits of using this medication, and breastfeeding women should ideally avoid its use or discontinue breastfeeding. It is advisable not to use this medication in children as safety has not been established.
