View approved original text

This medication improves symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia, reduces hyperplastic prostatic tissue, and helps facilitate urinary flow. It also decreases the frequency of acute urinary retention to prevent sudden difficulties in urination, and helps reduce the need for prostate surgery (such as transurethral resection of the prostate). It is used to effectively manage prostate health.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 5 mg of finasteride orally once daily, regardless of meals. Even if symptoms improve, at least 6 months of treatment is necessary.

Precautions

This medication is not to be used by children or women. In particular, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle this medication. If the tablet is broken or crushed, the active ingredient may be exposed, posing a risk to the fetus. Depression or mood changes may occur during the use of this drug; if such symptoms arise, it is essential to consult a physician. This medication is not to be administered to patients with hypersensitivity reactions or genetic issues such as lactose intolerance. Patients with liver dysfunction should use this medication with caution. This medication generally has few side effects; however, problems related to sexual function, such as erectile dysfunction, reduced libido, and ejaculation disorders may occur. If these symptoms persist, consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. There have been rare reports of male breast cancer associated with long-term use, so caution is necessary. This medication may slightly increase the risk of prostate cancer, so it is essential for men over 55 years of age to undergo regular examinations. This medication has minimal interactions with other drugs, so it can be taken with most medications without significant concerns; however, if you are taking other medications, inform your physician. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and women who may become pregnant should be careful not to handle the tablets directly. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been established, so it is not used in this population. Elderly patients can also use this medication without special dosage adjustments, but caution is necessary if any adverse reactions occur. This medication lowers prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels; this should be taken into account when interpreting PSA test results. There is no specific antidote in case of overdose, so it is crucial to adhere to the prescribed dosage strictly. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
