Improvement of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia
This medication serves as an adjunct to dietary therapy for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It helps to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels, thereby promoting cardiovascular health. Additionally, it may be used in pediatric patients aged 10 to 16 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia who meet certain conditions. This medication helps to reduce the risk of early cardiovascular disease and improve blood lipid levels. It is effective when used in conjunction with dietary therapy.
For adults, the usual starting dose is 1 to 2 mg of pitavastatin calcium once daily. If the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect is insufficient, the maximum dosage may be increased to 4 mg per day. Dosage should be adjusted appropriately at intervals of 4 weeks or more based on LDL cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and patient response.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (aged 10 to 16 years), take 1 mg of pitavastatin calcium once daily. If the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect is insufficient, the maximum dosage may be increased to 2 mg per day.
This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to certain ingredients, have active liver disease, or have persistent unexplained elevations in liver enzymes. Patients with severe liver dysfunction or bile duct obstruction, as well as those taking cyclosporine, should not take this medication. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are nursing should not use this medication. It should also be avoided in patients with genetic conditions such as lactose intolerance. Patients with renal function impairment or a history of liver disease should use this medication cautiously, especially when taking fibrates or niacin, as the risk of muscle damage and renal function deterioration increases. Elderly patients, children, those with hypothyroidism, and patients with genetic muscle disorders should also be monitored closely. Since this medication is primarily metabolized in the liver, regular liver function tests should be conducted, and the medication should be immediately discontinued if liver function abnormalities are detected. If symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, there is a risk of serious muscle damage, such as rhabdomyolysis, and a doctor should be consulted immediately. This medication is used to regulate blood lipid levels, so blood lipid tests should be performed regularly before and during treatment. There may be interactions with other medications, so caution is advised when taken with cyclosporine, fibrates, niacin, erythromycin, etc. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and those planning to become pregnant or who are already pregnant must consult a doctor. In children, this medication is used only restrictively for the treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia, and physical activity and muscle condition should be closely monitored. When storing, keep it out of the reach of children and store it in the original container to prevent misuse or quality degradation.
