View approved original text

This medication is used to treat osteoporosis in both postmenopausal women and men. Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weak, increasing the risk of fractures, and this medication helps maintain bone health and increase bone density, thereby reducing the risk of fractures. It is particularly effective in managing osteoporosis after menopause in both women and men.

How to take

Adult dose

As alendronate, take 70 mg once a week in the morning with a sufficient amount of water (170 to 230 mL), at least 30 minutes before food, beverages, or other medications. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking, and avoid taking this medication before bedtime or upon waking. If a scheduled dose is missed, take 70 mg the following morning.

Precautions

This medication can cause irritation to the stomach and esophagus, so patients with gastrointestinal diseases such as Barrett's esophagus, dysphagia, gastritis, duodenitis, and ulcers should use it cautiously. After taking this medication, symptoms related to the esophagus such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, and esophageal erosion may occur, and in severe cases, it may progress to esophageal obstruction or perforation, so immediate cessation of use and consultation with a physician are required if symptoms arise. This medication must be taken with a sufficient amount of water, and for at least 30 minutes after taking it, the patient should not lie down to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation. Especially patients with mental disorders must fully understand and adhere to the method of taking it, as otherwise serious side effects may occur. Patients with esophageal motility disorders, hypocalcemia, severe renal failure, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, nursing mothers, and patients with certain genetic disorders should not take this medication. During use, blood calcium levels should be periodically monitored, and it is important to check for symptoms of hypocalcemia, ensuring adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D. Severe muscle, bone, or joint pain may occur infrequently, so if pain is severe, patients should inform their doctor. A rare side effect known as osteonecrosis of the jaw has also been reported, so in cases where dental treatment is needed, patients should consult their doctor and maintain oral hygiene. Long-term use may infrequently lead to fractures in specific parts of the femur, so if symptoms of fracture occur, patients should visit a hospital immediately. This medication may interact with other drugs, so caution should be taken, especially when taken together with calcium supplements, antacids, aspirin, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, allowing sufficient time between doses. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and safety for children and adolescents under 18 has not been established. Elderly patients can also use it, but some may be more sensitive to the medication, so caution is necessary. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal adverse reactions such as esophagitis, gastritis, and ulcers may occur, so contact a healthcare institution immediately and receive appropriate measures in case of an overdose. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it is recommended not to transfer it to another container.
