Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in patients with obesity
This medication is a short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher who do not respond to proper diet and exercise, or for those with a BMI of 27 or higher who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia. Patients should use this medication in conjunction with a weight loss regimen based on caloric restriction. Please remember that this medication should be used alone and not in combination with other appetite suppressants. The body mass index is calculated by dividing the patient's weight (kg) by the square of height (m), which is used to determine obesity. This medication is effectively utilized for the health enhancement and weight loss of obese patients who struggle to control their weight.
Adults: Administer 25 mg of diethylpropion hydrochloride orally 3 times daily, 1 hour before meals. The maximum daily dose is 75 mg. Take this medicine no later than 4 hours before bedtime. To minimize the potential for abuse, prescribe or dispense the lowest possible dose during initial treatment (within 2 weeks), adjusting the dose individually to achieve an adequate response. This medicine should be administered for a short term (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of inappropriate use, treatment may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (at least 1.8 kg of weight loss, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and patient).
This medication should not be used in combination with other appetite suppressants and should only be used alone for a short period. It is not recommended to combine with other medications for weight loss, as safety and efficacy have not been established. The weight loss effect of this medication is limited, and tolerance may develop after a certain period, so do not increase the dosage and stop using it. Long-term use may lead to drug abuse and dependence, so it must be managed strictly. If psychological dependence occurs, the dosage should be gradually reduced before discontinuation, as abrupt discontinuation may result in severe fatigue and depression. If symptoms such as angina, syncope, peripheral edema, or shortness of breath during exercise occur, stop taking the medication immediately and check for pulmonary hypertension. This medication may increase the risk of rare but fatal pulmonary hypertension, so caution is required. There are risks associated with heart valve disease, so it is advisable to undergo cardiac examinations before and during treatment. This medication should not be used in patients with certain conditions or those taking specific medications. Caution should be exercised for patients with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, epilepsy, diabetes, etc., and regular monitoring is necessary. Side effects may include insomnia, irritability, dizziness, anxiety, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, epigastric pain, arrhythmias, palpitations, elevated blood pressure, changes in electrocardiograms, exercise abnormalities, blurred vision, hyperexcitability, restlessness, unusual euphoria, discomfort, depression, tremors, dilated pupils, drowsiness, fatigue, headaches, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, unpleasant taste, xerostomia, stomatitis, other gastrointestinal disorders, erectile dysfunction, dysmenorrhea, changes in libido, menstrual pain. In case of overdose, severe toxic symptoms and cardiovascular abnormalities may appear, so immediate medical attention should be sought. It is advisable for pregnant or nursing women not to use this medication, especially during early pregnancy. The use of this medication is not recommended for children and the elderly. Since this medication affects the central nervous system, caution should be taken when driving or operating dangerous machinery. This medication can interact with other medications, so it is essential to inform healthcare professionals of any other medications being taken. This medication is classified as a schedule drug, with potential for abuse and dependence, so it should be strictly used under a doctor's guidance.
