This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiac and vascular diseases. It lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in elderly patients and adult patients with various risk factors such as hypertension, smoking, and family history, and decreases the risk of vascular interventions or angina. It also reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients. Furthermore, it has a proven effect in reducing the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, and hospitalization for congestive heart failure in patients who have direct clinical evidence. This medication is also used in patients with hyperlipidemia to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol, improving the blood lipid profile. It can also benefit certain children and adolescents with hypercholesterolemia. Therefore, this medication is used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and dyslipidemia.
