This medication is used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia. It helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, need for revascularization, and occurrence of angina in adults at high risk for cardiovascular disease and patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with coronary heart disease and decreases the risk of hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. This drug is used to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels, and to raise HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It is especially effective in improving blood lipid levels safely in pediatric patients who do not achieve control with diet. Therefore, this medication is very effective for the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk and the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
