Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used as an adjunct treatment together with dietary and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone, but if blood sugar control is insufficient, it can be administered in combination with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents. Particularly, when blood sugar control is difficult with sulfonylureas or metformin alone, this medication can be given with metformin to enhance effectiveness. Thus, it supports various methods for blood sugar management, assisting in the treatment of diabetes.
Administered orally once daily. It should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal, swallowed whole without chewing, with more than 1/2 cup of water. For monotherapy, the initial dosage is 1 mg once daily, which can be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, the maximum dose is 4 mg, but if necessary, it can be increased to 6 mg or 8 mg. In the case of combination therapy with insulin, the starting dose is 1.
This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a state of coma. It should also not be administered to patients who are allergic to this medication or its ingredients, or who have severe liver or kidney dysfunction. Use in pregnant or potentially pregnant women and breastfeeding women is not recommended. Patients with severe infections, those undergoing surgery, or those who have suffered severe trauma are advised to switch to insulin treatment. Caution is advised for patients with gastrointestinal disorders due to the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders. In the initial stages of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so careful blood sugar monitoring is particularly necessary for elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status, and those with irregular meals. Caution is also needed for alcohol consumers or patients with kidney and liver dysfunction, as well as those with specific endocrine disorders due to a higher risk of hypoglycemia. Patients with allergies to specific dye components should also be cautious when taking this medication. Symptoms of hypoglycemia can include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, decreased consciousness, etc., and immediate treatment should be sought if such symptoms occur. Some patients may experience blurred vision, gastrointestinal symptoms, abnormal liver function, reduced blood cell counts, and allergic reactions, and should notify healthcare professionals if abnormal symptoms appear. This medication should be used together with a regular diet and exercise therapy, and in the case of hypoglycemia, sugar should be consumed to respond quickly. It may interact with other medications, so if any medications are being taken, it is essential to inform healthcare professionals. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, it is advisable to avoid using this medication, and if necessary, to switch to insulin treatment. Its safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 18 years of age have not been established, so its use is not recommended. For elderly patients, dosage adjustments may be necessary considering reduced kidney function. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, and immediate emergency treatment should be sought; this medication should be kept out of reach of children.
