View approved original text

This medication is used for patients with hypertension as well as for those with myocardial ischemia due to stable angina and variant angina. It helps reduce the burden on blood vessels and the heart by controlling hypertension and alleviating cardiac pain and vascular spasms associated with angina. Therefore, it is effective in improving blood flow to the myocardium and protecting cardiac function. It is used to enhance cardiovascular health in patients owing to these effects.

How to take

Adult dose

Amlodipine 5 mg should be taken orally once a day. If symptoms do not improve within 2 to 4 weeks, the dose may be increased up to 10 mg daily based on the patient's response. Adjustments should be made according to symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, it should not be used in individuals with allergies to this drug or similar components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients in cardiogenic shock, those with severe aortic stenosis, unstable angina patients, individuals within one month post-myocardial infarction, patients with severe liver dysfunction, those with severe hypotension, and patients with genetic issues like lactose intolerance. Moreover, caution is necessary when prescribing this drug to patients with very poor kidney function, the elderly, individuals with acute heart failure, hypertensive crisis patients, those with mildly impaired liver function, patients with limited left ventricular function, patients with low cardiac reserve, and diabetic patients. Taking this medication may occasionally result in symptoms such as warmth and facial flushing, fatigue, edema, palpitations, dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, drowsiness, and ankle edema. Rarely, side effects such as dry mouth, increased sweating, hypotension, vasculitis, insomnia, skin rash, liver function abnormalities, etc., may occur; therefore, it is essential to consult a doctor immediately if abnormal symptoms arise. Stopping this medication abruptly can exacerbate symptoms, so it is necessary to gradually reduce the dosage per the doctor's instructions, ensuring not to interrupt taking it arbitrarily. When taking this medication, it should be consumed with ample water, and caution is advised during driving or operation of hazardous machinery due to the possibility of dizziness caused by blood pressure-lowering effects. This medication may interact with several other drugs, so if any other medications are being taken, it is crucial to inform the healthcare provider or pharmacist, especially avoiding co-administration with grapefruit juice. In pregnant or breastfeeding women, its safety has not been established, so it is advisable to avoid use. It's also not recommended for children as its safety and effectiveness have not been sufficiently confirmed. In the elderly, due to the potential for higher concentrations of the drug in the body, it is advised to start with a lower dosage and closely monitor the patient’s condition during treatment. In cases of overdose, severe hypotension, cardiac issues, or disturbances in consciousness may appear, necessitating immediate medical treatment, and appropriate cardiovascular supportive treatment may be required in emergency situations. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of reach of children, and care should be taken not to transfer it to another container.
