Treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (e.g., difficulty urinating) and hypertension
This medication is used to control hypertension, that is, high blood pressure, and also helps improve urination problems or urinary obstruction symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. Thus, it is effectively used for issues related to hypertension and prostatic enlargement.
○ Adults 1. Hypertension: Administer doxazosin orally once daily at an initial dose of 1㎎, and increase to 2㎎ after 1 week according to the patient's response. To achieve the desired blood pressure control, the dose may be increased gradually at intervals of 1-2 weeks to 4㎎, 8㎎, and 16㎎ daily. If blood pressure cannot be controlled with this drug alone, it may be administered in combination with a thiazide diuretic or β-blocker. 2. Urinary retention and voiding disorders due to benign prostatic hyperplasia: The initial dose is 1㎎ once daily. Depending on the patient's blood pressure, the daily dose may be increased to 2㎎ at intervals of 1-2 weeks, and may be increased gradually to 4㎎ and 8㎎. ᛫ Adjust the dose according to age and symptoms.
This medication can cause orthostatic hypotension, therefore dizziness or fainting may occur when starting the medication or increasing the dose, or when stopping and then resuming it. Therefore, it is important to start with a low dose and gradually adjust the dose. This medication can rarely cause a condition called priapism, which, if not treated early, can lead to permanent erectile dysfunction, so caution should be exercised. Patients with allergies to this drug or similar ingredients, leukopenia, hypotension, children under 12 years of age, and those with certain genetic lactose metabolism abnormalities should not use this medication. Patients with liver function problems should use this drug cautiously, monitoring for adverse reactions through blood tests and other means. This medication can cause various side effects including dizziness, headache, drowsiness, nausea, hypotension, palpitations, shortness of breath, and rash, among others, so if symptoms are severe or unusual, immediate consultation with a healthcare provider is advised. When taking this medication, it is important to move slowly when getting up suddenly, and if symptoms of dizziness or hypotension occur, it is vital to lie down and rest immediately. Also, caution should be exercised while driving or operating hazardous machinery. If taken with other antihypertensive agents or diuretics, or certain erectile dysfunction treatments, the risk of hypotension may increase, so it is essential to consult with a physician. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should only use this medication under a doctor's judgment as its safety has not been established, and breastfeeding should be avoided when possible. Special caution is needed when administering to children or the elderly, as safety has not been adequately confirmed or the risk of side effects may be higher. In case of overdose, severe hypotension may occur, so lay down with your head low immediately and seek appropriate treatment at a hospital if necessary. This medication must be stored out of reach of children, and it is recommended not to transfer it to other containers to ensure safety and maintain quality.
