Improvement of symptoms and urinary flow in benign prostatic hyperplasia, reduction in the need for surgery
This medication helps improve symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. It reduces the hypertrophied prostate tissue to facilitate urinary flow and lowers the occurrence of acute urinary retention. Additionally, it decreases the necessity for surgeries, such as transurethral resection of the prostate, by reducing cases that require prostate surgery. Through these effects, it improves patients' urinary discomfort.
As finasteride, take 5 mg orally once daily, regardless of meals. Even if symptoms improve during treatment, a minimum treatment duration of 6 months is necessary.
This medication should not be used in children or women, and especially pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should avoid contact with broken pieces of this drug. During the use of this medication, depression or mood changes may occur, so it is essential to consult a healthcare professional immediately if any psychiatric symptoms arise. It should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity or certain genetic lactose intolerance, and caution should be exercised in patients with liver dysfunction. This drug generally has minor and temporary side effects, but care should be taken as sexual dysfunction or breast-related abnormal symptoms may occur. This drug has minimal interactions with other medications, but it is essential to inform healthcare personnel of any other medications being taken during usage. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, particularly because it can affect male fetuses during pregnancy. Safety in children has not been established, so it should not be prescribed to them. Elderly patients can use it without specific dose adjustments, but they should consult healthcare professionals based on their physical condition. This medication may alter prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, so this should be considered during check-ups; if there is a continuous increase in PSA levels, consult a healthcare professional. There is no specific antidote for overdose, but adherence to the recommended dosage is crucial, and it must be kept out of reach of children. Additionally, it is safer to store the medication in its original packaging and not transfer it to another container.
